France has long been a favourite destination for the British because of its closeness though is also extremely popular with visitors from around the globe as well, attracting over 79 million tourists per year, which makes it the most visited destination in the world.

Travelling to France from the UK is very straightforward and there are lots of options available, though taking a flight from the UK means the whole of France is easily accessible in the quickest time. With the onset of popular budget airlines, flights to France can be very inexpensive too. Budget airlines also offer the convenience of flying to smaller cities across the country, whereas the scheduled carriers tend to fly mainly to Paris. Although not accessible by all airlines, there are approximately 480 airports in France! Easyjet, for example, have multiple routes from the UK to France, including flights from: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Newcastle, Bristol, Liverpool and Luton to Paris Charles de Gaulle; Bristol and Gatwick to Marseille, La Rochelle and Toulouse; Birmingham, Bristol, Bournemouth, Luton and Gatwick to Grenoble, to name a few.

France is so popular with tourists because it offers such a diverse range of attractions, from cities, to coasts, to mountains, to vineyards there is something here to suit all tastes!

Northern France

Northern France is generally lowlands and coastal plains, and other than the capital city, Paris, this area is not renowned for its tourism. Paris speaks for itself – the culture, heritage and architecture are the main appeal, and flights to Paris can be bought very cheaply as there’s so much competition between the airlines.

In north-west France you will find the famous Loire Valley, known for its wine, its landscapes, its architectural heritage and its castles. This part of France is an area worth touring, especially between Maine and Sally-sur-Loire as this stretch of the Valley has been classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A flight from the UK to either Nantes or Paris, then a short journey, would get you to the Loire Valley.

Northern France has a mainly temperate climate, much like the UK, with warm summers and mild winters and a similar amount of rainfall.

Southern France

Southern France is far more mountainous, being dominated by three mountain ranges, the Massif Central, the Alps and the Pyrenees. The Massif Central is in south-central France and is separated from the Alps in the east by the Rhone Valley. At the northern end of the Valley is the city of Lyon, the 3rd largest city in France, which too has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can fly from the UK direct to Lyon.

There are three relatively small ski resorts in the Massif Central, but of course the Alps and the Pyrenees are where most skiers head, for the best choice of dozens of resorts. The best access airport for much of the Alps is Grenoble and there are flights here direct from the UK. For the Pyrenees, in the far south, Toulouse is probably the best place to fly to from the UK. At the foot of the Pyrenees the town of Lourdes is particularly important for religious tourism, attracting 5 million pilgrims each year.

At the southern end of the Alps, on the Mediterranean coast, is the city of Nice and the French Riviera (or Cote d’Azur, as it is called in France). This area attracts the rich and famous to places like Monaco and Cannes and has developed so successfully because of its Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and mild winters. To mingle with celebrities, catch a flight to Nice or Marseille, France’s second largest city.
