Lyon is the third largest city in France after Marseille and Paris. It has a great reputation for good food and history. Lyon is in the South of France although not on the coast. Lyon has plenty of shops to keep you occupied and stunning architecture too. It is also known as the gateway to the Alps; perfect if you like to ski.
Flights
Flying to Lyon from the UK is easy. Cheap flights are available from Easyjet, Bmibaby and British Airways. Nearly all of the Major international airports in the UK will have some flights to Lyon, although this will depend on the airline – make sure you check beforehand that your chosen airline has flights to your destination from your local passport. If you become stuck for a flight, be aware that you could fly to another area and get a coach or even hire car to visit Lyon. The local airport, Lyon Saint Exupery is just 15 miles east of Lyon city centre. With a UK passport you will be able to visit without any restrictions although you must make sure your passport is valid.
Climate
The weather in Lyon is varied and seasonal. On one hand the summers are very hot and can just touch 30 centigrade, for those wanting to catch some rays. There is little rainfall in the summer, although when it does come, it usually comes with thunderstorms. In the winter, it can be very cold and snowy, perfect for those who like real winter getaways with a touch of romance. Therefore, you can even visit the Alpines for a ski session during the colder months. The rest of the year is moderate and balanced, where it is neither hot nor cold, making it a good destination for those who like a gentle climate.
What to do
Lyon is a city with lots of attractive architecture and atmosphere too. Just a small stroll through the city will reveal art shops, churches and cafes. There are various churches all over Lyon that date back into the Middle Ages. There is also an early synagogue and central mosque for those who are interested in religious history. There are plenty of museums, especially ones about French history – at the Centre d’Histoire de la Resistance et de la Deportation you can learn about the French resistance, for example.
Lyon is well known for its amazing food; there are around a thousand restaurants in the city and it is famed for its luxurious and creative dishes, which are fresh and tasty. You can visit a Michelin star luxury restaurant or a simple bistro – the choice is yours. Don’t forget to visit the shop! Lyon is filled with lots of elegant stores as well as some younger boutiques – there are plenty of tourist shops but some of the best things are found in antique stores and market stalls.
Finally consider a boat cruise down the Saone and Rhone rivers which will show you the whole city. They will cover the churches, the bridges and some of the natural areas.
