Marseille is a popular destination in the South of France; yet it isn’t the first place people think of when they plan a break to the country. Marseille is a mixture of cultures and ideas; on one hand it is on a port so has beaches and sea views – on the other hand, it’s full of street markets, old architecture and galleries. For most people this destination is a way of learning more about France.

Flights

There are lots of choices if you wish to travel to Marseille. Bmibaby and Easyjet offer some flights as do Ryanair and Skyscanner. You can catch flights to Marseille from most of the major airports although some airlines are limited; for example, Easyjet will fly to Marseille from London Gatwick only but these terms can change so always check directly with the airlines. There are some good prices to be found with the bargain airlines, especially if you book it advance or very close to the departure date. The local airport is Aeroport de Marseille Provence. With a UK passport there will be no problems entering the country for a holiday.

Climate

Because Marseille is on the coast, the weather is warm and sunny throughout the summer months. The spring and autumn are mild – the weather is generally very pleasant all year round. During the summer, July and August, is it extremely sunny and hot so decide how much you like this. If you If you like to hide from the sun there are lots of cafes for you to take some shelter and enjoy the food. The winters are bright and the weather can be mild. However, like British weather it can be unpredictable so there can be downpours.

What to do

Marseille is full of rich architecture and ancient buildings. The Vieille Major Cathedral dates back to the 12th century and is a stunning landmark. Boat trips are also a great way to see the city and neighbouring little islands – for example you can also take a ferry to Cahteau d’If which is the setting for the book, The Count of Monte Cristo.

When it comes to food, Marseille is full of Mediterranean type food as well as North African influenced meals. There are also tourist foods and also general French food. Marseille is also the seafood capital of Provence – fresh fish is sold daily by the Vieus Port – if you are staying in self catering accommodation you may be able to take some home to cook! Otherwise you can find some restaurants serving tasty fresh seafood – Bouillabaisse is a traditional fish soup and worth a try if you like seafood. You can also take an old ferry to cross the harbour.

There are beaches on Marseille for you to visit; also consider taking a walk down the Corniche road which is a 2 mile walk past the seafront.
