Places in Germany
Berlin is the capitol city of Germany. The city is steeped in history and culture making it a popular tourist hotspot; it is the third most visited city in the EU. Berlin homes some of the most prestigious museums and universities, buildings and monuments. It is also a very modern city with plenty of nightclubs and places for fun. During the summer, beer gardens and free concerts litter the streets and there are plenty of parks to relax in.
Flights
Berlin is a very popular tourist destination so there are lots of flights to the city. You can fly with affordable airlines like Bmibaby and Easyjet direct to Berlin from the major UK Airports such as Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester. Not all of the airlines fly to Berlin from every single airport so check which airline will cater for the airport closest to you. Flight prices are competitive because it is a popular destination throughout the year; even in the winter the German Christmas markets are visited by tourists all over so you shouldn’t have a problem getting a flight. Berlin has two airports, Tegel and Tempelhof. There is also a third airport in East Berlin called the Schonefield (to be transformed into the Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport in 2011).
Climate
Berlin has a warm and sunny summer and the temperatures can reach 30c in the warmer months of July and August. Like the UK though, the weather can suddenly drop and it can become overcast and rainy. Their winter is very cold and damp and there can be snow and frost. Rain can fall throughout the year, especially in June and August. If you are going during these months then take into account the weather and make sure you have suitable clothing for hot and cold weather, as well as a raincoat or umbrella.
What to do
Berlin has a huge mix of activates to take part in; it can cater for you if you like art and sightseeing, or if you like to drink and dance, and so on. There are lots of places to sightsee – the place you must visit is the old Berlin Wall border crossing at Check Point Charlie. There is also a museum there documenting this building and fall of this wall. There is also the Brandenburg Gate, which is a large and stunning piece of architecture.
There is plenty of art and museums around Berlin due to the fact that Germany has plenty of history, especially because of the Second World War. There are new museums opening in Berlin all the time so no matter what you are interested in there will be something for you; there are plenty of war museums, but also a Jewish museum and a film museum. The museum of contemporary art in Hamburger Bahnhof and the Old National Gallery are equivalent to the National Gallery in London and are well worth a visit.
If you just want to relax there are plenty of beer gardens in Berlin where you sit at communal tables with a beer and maybe some food (try Berlin’s sausages!). Famous beers include the Weissbier and Hefeweizen. German clubs are known to be lively, with a strong music scene and a love of all things quirky and unique.
