Flights to Cologne
Places in Germany
Cologne is the forth largest city in Germany. It is a fairly popular destination for UK tourists, and houses a vibrant arts scene and generally relaxed, elegant streets alongside being modern and cosmopolitan. There are lots of traces of Roman history as seen in the architecture dotted around the street and there is the famous River Rhine running through the centre of the city. There are plenty of botanical gardens and cultural festivals.
Flights
Cologne is a popular destination in Germany so there are plenty of flights with the big bargain airlines like Easyjet and flyBmi. Luthansa and KLM also fly regularly to Cologne from the UK from most of the major international Airports, like Birmingham, Manchester, Heathrow and Gatwick. Because there are so many flights the prices are generally very competitive and you should be able to find a good cheap flight then find accommodation yourself – alternatively some websites offer weekend package deals that include flights and accommodation. Flights are available all year round since Germany is a popular destination with Christmas shoppers. The local airport is Cologne Bonn.
Climate
Cologne has a very pleasant climate – it’s warm in the summer thought not unbearably so and the winters are cold but atmospheric. Like England, the weather in Cologne tends to change from day to day. During the summer, it tends to go to 24c or less but in hot days it goes 30c. The weather tends to drop at night so make sure that even if you visit in the summer months take something warm with you. In the winter, there are some Christmas markets, which are atmospheric and stunning but at the same time the weather is just 5c so wrap up! There is a tendency for rain during summer; in fact autumn and spring are drier seasons in Cologne so expect some showers even in July.
What to do
Cologne is a beautiful city; don’t miss a chance to go on a boat down the River Rhine, where you will get to see much of the city and visit the medieval town of Zons. There are also lots of excursions that take you slightly out of the city and to the greener parts of town.
There are lots of clubs and places to eat in Cologne with a relaxed atmosphere. There are lots of live music too like Jazz and Latin. There is a carnival in February and gay pride events come July.
Cologne has lots of museums for different tastes too – the Wallraff-Richartz Museum has an impressive collection of art, including work from Van Gogh, Cezanne, Money, Renoir, Rembrandt and Gauguin. The famous Ludwig Museum has modern art like Dali, Liechtenstein, Picasso and Andy Warhol. Also, the Agfa photo Museum has a collection of old photographic equipment and photographs. Don’t forget that Germany is known for its tasty chocolates! Take a visit to the Stollwerck Chocolate Museum which has a large chocolate fountain and other goodies to take home as a gift.
