Frankfurt, or Frankfurt am Main, as it is officially called, is the 5th largest city in Germany. It is the only city in Germany with a skyline, which, from a distance, you could mistakenly think you’d arrived in the USA!

As the main air hub in Germany and the second busiest airport in Europe, after Heathrow, you should have no problem catching a flight from the UK to Frankfurt. Being a hub, the majority of the world’s biggest airlines have regular flights here, including British Airways and Lufthansa. If you’re looking for a budget airline be careful, it may sound like a good deal but check which Frankfurt airport it’s flying to.

Frankfurt International (airport code: FRA) is close to the city centre and is easily accessible by taxi, bus and train. However, there is another Frankfurt airport, called Hahn (airport code: HHN), which is not very close and it can actually take up to 2 hours to reach the city from here. So although your flight from the UK may be cheaper, it’s quite a compromise especially if you’re only visiting for a short break.

City Attractions

The city is called Frankfurt am Main because it is situated on the River Main. It is the financial capital of Europe and is known for its high-rise skyline, but Frankfurt isn’t just about finance and big businesses, as alongside these skyscrapers you will find historic, traditional German architecture.

The city is home to many large trade fairs each year and hence business tourism is a very important sector for the economy. If you’re planning a trip to Frankfurt find out first whether there are any major trade fairs on at the time, because if there are, finding accommodation can be difficult.

For a great view of the city, the Main Tower is open to the public. You can reach here via the city’s underground system and get off at either Willy-Brandt-Platz or S-Bahn-station Taunusanlage. The cost is around €5 for an adult ticket and is well worth it. The elevator takes you up to the viewing platform at a height of 200 metres, giving you an excellent view of the city and surrounds, provided you come on a clear day.

Frankfurt has a good range of museums, most being clustered within the Museumsufer district. One of the most famous is the Senckenberg Nature Museum – Naturmuseum Senckenberg which features natural history exhibits and dinosaur skeletons amongst other things.

For a taste of the old Frankfurt, visit the Römerberg area. The Römer Square is based around the town hall and is a nice place for having a coffee in one of the café’s and for doing a spot of shopping. Although the buildings look like the authentic 14th and 15th century architecture, the area was actually destroyed during the war, but rebuilt in replica.

If you would prefer a more honest look at some medieval architecture, visit the Bornheim residential quarter, where there are some beautiful medieval houses and an appealing market.

Some of the other places you might like to visit include the Oper Frankfurt where you can watch an affordably priced opera. The Eiserner Steg (Iron Bridge) which is a pedestrian bridge crossing the River Main and gives some good views of the city skyline and from here you can walk along the river. Palmengarten, meaning ‘palm garden’ is Frankfurt’s botanical gardens and Grueneburgpark is Frankfurt’s largest public park, nice for a stroll away from the hustle and bustle.

When should you visit?

For the best weather, come between late spring to early autumn for temperatures in the mid 20’s C (77F). In the middle of the summer the city can get hot, up to 35C (95F) although summer showers are quite common too.
