Hamburg is a beautiful city in the north of Germany that has a modern side as well as strong history and culture that have led to it becoming a World Heritage Site. Hamburg is the second largest city in the country and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany.

Flights to Hamburg

The main airport in Hamburg is the Hamburg-Fuhlsbuttel Airport (airport code: HAM), as the smaller Hamburg-Finkenwerder Airport (code: XFW) is actually only used for Airbus production. Several flights to Hamburg from London are non-stop, and you can book with Lufthansa, British Airways or BMI for the one and a half hour trip. Low cost airlines are also an option, with EasyJet offering a flight to Hamburg from Gatwick, Luton or Manchester, and FlyBe flying from Birmingham.

Hamburg Tourist Attractions

Hamburg does have some lovely historical landmarks to see, though unfortunately there’s less here than there might otherwise be thanks to great fires, raids and more over the centuries. The city was founded in 808AD when a fortress was built and it has grown and declined many times since then. Today it is actually the second largest city in Germany and is home to the third largest port in Europe.

Historic Warehouse District

Talking of Hamburg’s port the city’s historic warehouse district is a great place to see this part of the city’s history. The old warehouses were once full of life with ships coming and going, unloading and loading, and because of its importance this has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can see this part of Hamburg well by boat, or on dry land visit a couple of the city’s popular tourist attractions, the Hamburg Dungeon, and the Minatur Wunderland where there are miniature scenes from the city, Europe and the US, with the world’s largest miniature railway!

Hamburg City Hall

The original town hall was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1842 and it took over 40 years for another to be started, then eleven years to build it. It was worth the wait though, as Hamburg City Hall is a striking and beautiful piece of architecture in a Neo-Renaissance style. You can go inside and tour limited parts of the city hall, or just admire its greatness from the outside.

Art Museums

Hamburg has a number of museums, but there are several dedicated to art worth seeing. The Museum of Arts and Crafts features fine, decorative and applied arts, while the Kunsthalle Hamburg has quite the mix of art from different periods – there is 14th, 16th and 17th as well as 19th century art plus modern, and contemporary art too.

Other museums focus on local history, and one is dedicated to labour, plus there are a couple of museum ships; one a freight ship and one a cargo sailing ship.

When Should You Visit Hamburg?

July and August are the best times to visit Hamburg for warmer sightseeing weather, with average highs of 22C, although you may have to deal with some rain so pack an umbrella. Rain could dampen your spirits at any time of the year, but if you want to visit on a lighter month that would be May when temperatures are mild, around 17C. Between October and April the weather really isn’t good for sightseeing as it’s cool and damp.
