Located in Central Europe, Germany is a country which, despite its troubled past, has a booming economy the 3rd largest in the world, and this economy has really helped to modernise the country over the last few decades in particular. Its cities now offer modern amenities and architecture blended with historic buildings and culture, whilst its rural areas offer Alpine scenery, skiing and forests. You can even come to Germany for a beach holiday on the Baltic Sea coast!

Flights from the UK to Germany are aplenty. Frankfurt International airport is a major European hub so you will always be able to find an airline flying here. Apart from the scheduled airlines and Germany’s national airline, Lufthansa, budget carriers fly here too. The major airports are located in Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Munich and flights from the UK are available to all of these cities.

Northern Germany

The landscape of Northern Germany is relatively flat compared with the south and is composed of plains. The North Sea coast is not a particularly popular spot with tourists although the Baltic Sea Coast is becoming more so with visitors from outside of Germany, as well as being popular with Germans themselves. This is a nice location for enjoying a relaxing beach holiday, perhaps for those looking for something a bit different to the more standard Mediterranean beach holidays. The best airport to fly into for the Baltic Sea Coast would be Hamburg.

Hamburg is the country’s second largest city, most famous for its large harbour, music and musicals and has an active nightlife. Berlin is the more popular city with tourists and is Germany’s capital and largest city. Since the demolition of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Berlin has really bounced back and is now an important centre for culture and science and has both historic and modern architecture. Places like the Brandenburg Gate and Schloss Charlottenburg and worth visiting. Both Ryanair and Easyjet, for example, offer numerous flights from the UK to here.

The climate here is mostly temperate and therefore very similar to that of the UK. Although summers can be warm, this is unfortunately the time when the highest levels of rain fall, so a rain coat is advisable!

Southern Germany

Moving south, the landscape becomes more mountainous and forested. Regions like Bavaria, in the south-east offer visitors a taste of what’s considered the archetypal Germany – Beer drinkers and sausages! Munich is the largest city here and acts as the gateway to the Alps, so you would no doubt fly in to Munich if coming for a skiing holiday. The city itself is worth visiting for its culture and Bavarian architecture, particularly if you come during Oktoberfest!

The world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle is located 2 hours south of Munich and is one of the most visited places in Germany. Disney’s castle was actually inspired by this one! There are also various ski resorts in the Bavarian Alps, including the location for the 1936 Winter Olympics, Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

On the border with Switzerland and Austria lies the beautiful Lake Constance. This is Germany’s largest freshwater lake and the area offers opportunities for hiking and biking, such as the Lake Constance cycle route. Ryanair flies to Friedrichshafen, on the edge of Lake Constance, if you would like to visit this area.

Around Bavaria, the climate is mainly Continental and apart from on the higher mountains, summers can be very warm and pleasant, often exceeding 30C (86F). Typical of this sort of climate though are very cold winters.
