Munich is a city full of history and stories. Arts and politics are important to the city; it holds the famous Oktoberfest and has many of the finest art collections in the world. The city is on the edge of the Alps meaning the weather can be cold and unpredictable. It is nicely placed so that you can travel to Italy, Austria and neighbouring Switzerland for an extended holiday.
Flights
Munich is a popular destination in Germany to fly to. For direct flights, airlines such as Easyjet, British Airways, Lufthansa and KLM offer reasonably priced trips. Easyjet is generally the most affordable of the three airlines and fly from various locations around the country such as London Stanstead and Edinburgh airport. Flights are reasonably priced and with advanced booking, the prices are affordable. Remember that flying to Munich means you are close to 3 other European countries and the Alps. The local airport is Franz Josef Strauss Airport, situated in the North east of Germany.
Climate
Munich‘s weather in unpredictable. As the city lies on what is known as Bavaria, it has a high altitude and is close to the Alps. On one had it can be very warm but at the same time the winds from the direction of Alps can bring cold air, rain and even snow. In the summer, it is warm but there is also frequent rain and thunder. There is generally more rain towards the south of the city than the north. In the winter, there is a chill in the air which means the weather can fall to 0c. Take an umbrella and something warm no matter what time of year you visit!
What to do
Munich has plenty of fun activities for those who love history and culture and those who just want to relax and have fun. Different places have different atmospheres; some places are for older drinkers and some are better for students.
There are over 6,000 places in Munich that are licensed so sell beer; so there are plenty of places to relax and have a drink. If you like to eat, the Viktualienmarkt is a food market that serves new cuisines daily; you can buy cheese, meat, fruit, spices, chocolate, bread, flowers etc. It’s a great place to go for the local and tourists.
If you like classical music you can also visit the National Theatre or The Gasteif which houses the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. Munich was home to many prolific classical composers such as Richard Wagner, Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss.
If you can visit during late September and early October then there is a two week event called Oktoberfest – a famous festival where people drink beer and generally get involved with festivities. Around six million people attend each year so avoid it if you want to have a quite visit but if you want to get involved then make sure you visit those two weeks! Remember that prices for flights will be at a premium during this time.
