Athens is the capitol of Greece, and is one of the oldest and history rich cities in the world. It is the ideal place for a cultural city break. On one hand you can enjoy the people and food, the ancient sights and architecture, but then there is also a lot of the modern in Athens; romantic markets and night clubs.

Flights

There is a fair amount of choice when it comes to picking flights if you want to visit Athens as it is a popular destination. British Airways, Easyjet, Lufthansa KLM and BMI all offer flights to Athens. These are available all over the UK at international airports such as Heathrow, Birmingham and Manchester. Depending on the airport you want to fly from the airline will also vary. There are reasonable flights all year round to Athens since it is not a city that is ruled too much by its weather although during peak months (June – September) the price can be higher, so you’ll need to book in advance or at the very last minute. The local airport is Athens Eletherios Venizelos.

Climate

Athens has a Mediterranean climate, so during July and August, the temperature is in the 30s. During spring and autumn, the weather falls and becomes more temperate and this is seen as the ideal months to sightsee and to do outdoor activates. Athens is also unique in that it has snowfall almost every year, sometimes very heavy bouts. In February 2004, there was a snowstorm which caused temperatures to plummet to -7 centigrade.

What to do

Athens has a coast and therefore a beach which is worth visiting if you want to have a chance to relax in the sun. On the coast you will also be able to find fish restaurants that serve extremely fresh and tasty seafood.

Then there are lots of significant historical sights to see. The Parthenon and Acropolis are two of the most famous sights; the buildings to this day are incredibly big and have existed since the 5th Century. In many ways this structure tells us a lot about Greek history but also about development in general. These sights are very busy during the summer so be strategic as to when to visit; early in the day or the early afternoon.

The Plaka is another area of Athens that is worth visiting – the houses, churches and tavernas have a Romanic and old look that gives hours of picturesque scenery. It is also quite touristy so there are plenty of places to eat and buy things. Then there are the various Olympic stadiums to visit – the Olympics were invented in Greece and the first ever games took place in this city. In the modern times, Athens has hosted three Olympic Games. There is a replica of the ancient stadiums to be found in Syntama Square, which is in central Athens and is also next to the natural park and the Greek parliament. All in the entire square is well worth visiting.
