Greece is an appealing holiday destination because of its mix of hot and sunny climate combined with ancient history and culture.

Flights from the UK to Greece are available with a variety of carriers. The largest airport in Greece is in Athens, Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (airport code: ATH), though Thessaloniki (Makedonia International), in the north, also has flights from the UK direct. The national airline of Greece is Olympic Airlines who you can fly with direct from Heathrow to Athens or Thessaloniki, or choose British Airways. Fares are very reasonably priced.

The majority of charter flights from the UK go to the Greek Islands as opposed to mainland Greece, however, Monarch do fly to Preveza / Lefkas on the western coast and budget airline Easyjet flies to both Athens and Thessaloniki.

The Macedonian Region

Thessaloniki is the largest city in this region, and the second largest in Greece. The city gives you the opportunity to explore its 3000 year history, whilst within reach are over 300 miles of beaches on the Halkidiki Peninsula, as well as the Mount Olympus coast and several archaeological sites.

The city itself reflects its varied cultural past and includes many Byzantine churches and monuments, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as architecture from the Ottoman period and from a formerly dominant Jewish population.

The White Tower is a 16th century fortified tower. Inside is now the Museum of Byzantine Cultures, though you can also climb the tower for great views of the surrounding area. The Upper Town or ‘Ano Poli’ features pretty cobbled streets, and traditional old houses, whilst the Byzantine Churches vary in age from the 5th to the 14th century.

Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece and has a National Park. This hasn’t been particularly developed for visitors though in order to maintain the area and hence the best way to the top of the mountain is by trekking.

West Coast

The west coast of Greece on the Ionian Sea has long been a popular holiday destination with the Greeks, but hasn’t really been discovered by the British yet. However, Monarch are now flying here (to Preveza/Lefkas) so this presents a good opportunity to see a relatively unspoilt (tourist development wise) part of Greece on this Ionian coastline.

Athens

Athens is the largest city and capital of Greece which contains a combination of both ancient and modern architecture.

Athens is most famous for the Acropolis. This ancient “high city” is perched up on one the eight hills of Athens and has architecture mostly from the Classical period of Ancient Greece. The most famous is Parthenon, the largest temple here, which was dedicated to the goddess Athena. Since then the temple has also been a church and a mosque.

Other attractions include Syntagma Square (Constitution Square), in the centre of the city. This is a popular gathering place and sits opposite the Greek Parliament which was formerly the Royal Palace. Behind here are the National Gardens. You can watch the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and reach many of Athens other monuments from here too, such as Kallimarmaro Stadium (aka Panathinaiko) – the home of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 which is built entirely of white marble.

Climate

Greece has a Mediterranean climate along its coastlines, including Athens. Generally from April to November you are pretty much guaranteed hot and dry weather. Athens rainy season is between mid-October to mid-April. The July average high temperature is 33.5C (92F) whilst January is the coldest with an average low of 5.2C (41F).
