Kos is a small island that belongs to Greece – by small, we mean that the Island is only 40km by 8km – yet it attracts a high number of UK tourists every year because of its beautiful sunny weather, beaches, food and culture. The land is mountainous and it is both fertile and infertile on the volcanic mountains. Many people enjoy the contrast of a beach holiday that also has interesting plains to trek on.

Flights

Kos is a very popular holiday destination, especially in the summer so there are plenty of airlines that offer flights, leaving from a number of airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham and more. Because Kos is the type of location that normally comes under a package holiday, it can sometimes work out cheaper to book through an operator like Thomas Cook or First Choice who will combine the cost of the flight and the hotel than to just book a flight. Some mainstream bargain airlines like Easyjet do not fly directly to Kos and therefore the flights will cost more than those to city locations. The local hotel is Kos Ippokratis Airport. With a British passport you won’t have problems visiting the country.

Climate

Kos is a very sunny island, and through summer which is June to September the weather doesn’t fall below 30 degrees centigrade. This means that the nights are also hot and those who are restless in humid conditions may struggle to sleep without booking into a hotel with air conditioning facilities – remember to check this is available. Spring and autumn seasons bring some tourists and the weather is far more moderate, at around 20 degrees centigrade and with a little rainfall, which helps humid situations.

What to do

Kos may only be a small island but it is filled with activities. Firstly there are the sandy beaches, if you enjoy sunbathing and paddling in the sea. With so may hotels, most are not too far away from the coastline plus many hotels have their own pools.

Due to the rich history, there are plenty of excursions and things to see. Most of the hotels offer excursion trips so when you check into the hotel you will get a sheet with various activities, for example a day trip to a local market, or a day trip to the old volcanoes. You may be offered a boat ride or even a trip to the local aqua park – great if you have children.

Notable landscapes such as the Roman Odeo, an ancient ruin which was built in the 2nd century, a stadium used for fighting like the Colosseum was. There is also the Casa Romana near by which is a roman Manson. There’s also the white stone caves in Kefalos town – these white rocks give you a chance to climb and weave your way through whilst finding out about the caves that were known to exist from the Neolitis age to the Bronze era.
