Rhodes is a small Island part of the Dodecanese chain that is part of Greece. Rhodes is an island with beautiful beaches and a rich history; the island is famous for having one of the Seven Wonders of the World, The Colossus of Rhodes. The island rather interestingly resembles a spear head in its shape and is highly mountainous in the centre. Therefore the majority of people live around the edges of the Island. There are small beach resorts and villages all over the Island, including Faliraki, Archangelos, Afantou, Koskinou, Paradisi, and Trianta . One of the most notorious resorts is Faliraki, well known for being a haven for young clubbers.

Flights

Rhodes is a very popular location with UK travellers because it has beaches, hot weather and a laid back attitude. You can fly to Rhodes with most of the bargain airlines, such as Easyjet , Jet2, Luxair, Olympic Airlines and Agean Airlines from various locations throughout the UK. Rhodes is also popular with people who want package holidays and it can work out cheaper to books with a tour operator like Thomas Cook or Airtours as they will come up with a total price for the stay and accommodation. The local airport is Diagoras International Airport. With a valid UK passport there are no problems entering the country for a holiday.

Climate

Typical of a beach resort, Rhodes has hot sunny days in the summer months, especially in July and August, where the temperature reaches 30 degrees centigrade and rainfall is almost nonexistent. Come October and March some rainfall is expected and this generally keeps the atmosphere cool and bearable. It may be worth noting that Rhodes has suffered some strong earthquakes in its history. The most recent was in July 2008 where the earthquake measure 6.3 on the Richter scale.

What to do

Rhodes is very much a tourist island and it’s the number one trade – there are of course lots of stunning beaches, although some can become very crowded during the summer months. Remember that certain resorts may not be suitable for families with young children; Faliraki for example becomes very rowdy in the summer and the atmosphere may not be suitable for old and young people.

Like with many of the Greek Islands, there is a strong sense of history on the Island. There is the Medieval Town which is on the northern tip of the island (think of it as on the tip of the spear!). This shows one of the oldest and well preserved medical settlements in Europe. There is also the Acropolis of Ancient Rhodes – here there are temples for the various Greek mythological gods, such as a temple to Aphrodite (the goddess of love) and Helios (god of the sun).

Because the island is mountainous there are plenty of opportunities to go on walks and get some fresh air. The Seven Springs has a beautiful trail great for walkers – there is also a dark tunnel on the path which makes it fun for adults and children.

For adults only, Rhodes has its own casino if you like to have a gamble. You have to be over 23 to enter and play and hold a valid passport for security reasons.
