Destinations in Greece
Off the eastern coast of Greece, Skiathos is part of the Northern Sporades islands. The main city is Skiathos town and the other towns are considerably smaller. It's a popular spot with tourists though not as busy as the mainland of Greece. All the same, the beaches are the most famous draw to the island, and attract thousands of tourists every year.
Flights to Skiathos
The island does have its own airport, the Skiathos Island National Airport (airport code: JSI) but most international flights to Skiathos will transfer in Athens first. Olympic Airlines and BMI both have just one stop in Athens, but British Airways will take you through Thessaloniki as well as through Athens. Connections in Geneva and Prague are available with SwissAir and Czech Airlines but they also will stop in Athens during their flights to Skiathos. You can also travel via a charter airline from the UK; Thomson Airways, Thomas Cook Airlines, and Monarch Airlines all offer direct flights to Skiathos during the peak summer season.
Skiathos Tourist Attractions
Kastro
Kastro is the remains of a 12th century town that was built on a Skiathos cliff-side. Many of the buildings are in ruins, though some are mainly intact. The walk up to the town is a little steep but not unmanageable for most people as long as you have decent walking shoes. There are many jeep tours that can take you to Kastro from Skiathos Town, or you can walk, though it's about 3 hours each way.
Beaches
The entire island is ringed with more than 60 fantastic sandy beaches, some of them are busy and some are more remote. There are too many beaches to name them all but the best ones include: Koukounaries, Lalaria, Asselinos, and Kanapitsa. Some may require a boat ride to get there. They are great for sunbathing as well as many water sports and swimming.
Papadiamandis House
Alexandros Papadiamandis was a well-known Greek writer though he may not be familiar to most tourists. However, if you are interested in literature, you can visit the house where he lived and see many of the artefacts from his life. The museum is closed on Mondays, and is also closed during the afternoons, so you'll have to visit during the morning or evening.
Panagia Kechrias
Pagagia Kechrias is an old monastery near Kechria beach, and is a popular spot for tourists to visit. It's an 18th century construction though only the church itself has survived. It's decorated throughout with painted frescos. The area is peaceful, and makes for a nice walk if you are visiting the beach.
The Old Harbour
The old harbour area down between Bourtzi and Akropolis is historic and filled with restaurants, bars and shops. Both locals and tourists alike come to the harbour to walk along the water, particularly in the evening, and it’s a great spot to enjoy a drink or a meal.
When Should You Visit Skiathos?
Winters are very cool, but relatively comfortable if you don't mind wearing a jacket when you sightsee around the island. You wouldn't want to visit the beach from December until March though. It will be around 11C (52F) during those months. For warmer weather, visit during the summer between June and September. Daytime temperatures will be around 28C (83F) and great for swimming.
