Located in Central Europe Hungary is a beautiful country that has plenty to offer the tourist. It’s capital city, Budapest, is particularly popular for city breaks, but the country also features wonderful scenery, lakes, World Heritage Sites, and more.
Flights to Hungary
Hungary has a total of five international airports including one that is nearby to Lake Balaton, however it’s the capital city, Budapest, that is the main gateway for the majority of international flights to Hungary. The Budapest Ferihegy International Airport (airport code: BUD) is 10 miles (16km) from the centre of the city. From the UK there are both direct and indirect flights to Hungary. British Airways and discount airlines Easyjet and Ryanair provide non-stop flights to Hungary from the UK. Alternatively there are numerous scheduled airlines that have one stop flights to Hungary including Austrian, KLM, BMI, Lufthansa, Swiss, Qantas Airways, United Airlines, Air France, and Aer Lingus.
Hungary Tourist Attractions
Hungary has a great deal to offer though often it’s the country’s top two tourist destinations that many visitors come to see, Budapest and Lake Balaton. This is a country that’s great for a touring holiday though; renting a car in Budapest and making your way across the country to Lake Balaton would be an excellent way to get to see more of Hungary.
Budapest
Budapest is a very beautiful city and ahs really emerged over the last few decades as a very popular tourist destination, rivalling some of Europe’s most popular cities.
The River Danube divides the city into its older and newer halves, Buda and Pest, and though there are attractions in both it’s the older city, Buda, that many visitors spend most of their time in. Castle Hill is one of the top neighbourhoods for attractions as you’ll find the Royal Palace, the National Gallery, and Matthias Church here. From the Fisherman’s Bastion you’re awarded with amazing city views.
Lake Balaton
Not only is Lake Balaton that largest lake in Hungary, it is the largest in Central Europe. The lake is surrounded by some beautiful scenery as well as many lovely small towns and larger cities. The lake itself is popular for swimming, boating and sailing during the summer, while the hills surrounding it are perfect for hiking and enjoying the lake views. You can visit one of the lakeside towns, Heviz, which is home to the top thermal spa in Hungary.
Eger
In the north of Hungary is the city of Eger. If you like old castles than you’ll love a visit to Eger as its castle, Egri Var, is the top attraction. The castle is great for exploring, including its underground passageways, Gothic Palace, and art gallery. The city also has other things to see and do including a claustrophobic climb to the top of the minaret for great city views. This minaret is the tallest in Hungary and is also the furthest northerly minaret in Europe.
Hungary World Heritage Sites
Hungary has several UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the Hortobagy National Park, and the caves of Aggtelek within the Aggtelek National Park. There is also Pecs, an early Christian necropolis, and the Tokaj Wine Region Cultural Landscape.
When Should You Visit Hungary?
There is a continental climate in Hungary, and though there will be some variation across the country you can generally rely on warm to hot summers and cold winters. Summer time average high temperatures range from 27C to 35C and though there is low humidity rainfall is not uncommon. During the winter snow is likely and the average winter temperature range is between 0C and -15C.
