Dublin is the lively and popular capital city of the Republic of Ireland, and is also the largest city in the country. Known for its culture and friendly atmosphere Dublin has become one of Europe’s top tourist destinations over the last decade or so.

Flights to Dublin arrive at the Dublin Airport (airport code: DUB), the busiest airport in the republic of Ireland, which is situated about 6 miles from the city. Dublin Airport is linked to the city centre by buses and taxis at this time, though in years to come there will be an underground line between the two. Depending on where you’re travelling from in the UK you can get direct or indirect fights to Dublin. There are quite a selection of airlines to choose from including BMI, Lufthansa, discount airline Ryanair, and the Irish airline Aer Lingus who all provide travellers with non-stop flights to Dublin. Flybe and Aer Arann are alternatives offering flights to Dublin from the UK via one connection on the Isle of Mann.

Dublin Tourist Attractions

Dublin has always been well known for its lively atmosphere and for being a city of many pubs, but pub crawling is not the only reason to visit this beautiful city!

True enough, hen and stag dos are becoming very popular here because of this party-like atmosphere that can be found on just about every day of the year, but if you want to combine drinking with some cultural sights then Dublin is the place to come.

National Museum, Library and Gallery

The National Museum of Ireland is a good place to start your visit to Dublin, and being located close by to the National Library and National Gallery you can visit all three in succession without breaking the bank, as all are free entry! Here you’ll see the national collections including history and archaeology in the National Museum, and Irish and European art in the National Gallery. For more modern and contemporary art Dublin has the Irish Museum of Modern Art to offer.

Historical Dublin

Dublin has a great selection of historical attractions that should appeal to visitors of all tastes and ages. There is Dublin Castle for example, once the seat of British rule in Ireland. Christ Church Cathedral is the oldest building still standing within Dublin as this dates back to the 11th century even though there was a major restoration in the 19th century. The crypts below the cathedral even pre-date the building and a popular place to visit! A little way outside the city centre is the Kilmainham Gaol, an old prison which you can see via guided tour.

Dublin’s Family Attractions

If you’re visiting Dublin with children the city also has many great attractions perfect for families. There is Dublin Zoo, the largest zoo in Ireland which is located within the city’s Phoenix Park. There’s also the interesting and fun Dublinia and the Viking World attraction. Here you can see what Dublin was like back in Medieval times and the world of the Vikings.

When Should You Visit Dublin?

Dublin has a mild temperate climate and the city doesn’t usually suffer from any extremes of weather. During the summer Dublin is warm with average highs reaching around 19C (66F), perfectly pleasant for sightseeing. Winters are mild, with temperatures getting down to an average high of 7.6C (46F) in January. Rainfall is fairly consistent throughout the year, but on average July is the driest month.
