Florence is a city in Italy that is known for its beauty and sheer romance. It attracts millions of tourists each year because of its divine scenery and fine food. Florence lies in Tuscany, a popular part of the country. Florence is also a city rich in history and full of architecture – a great place to eat, shop and experience art.

Flights

You can fly to Florence from various locations in the UK, generally the major international airports, such as Birmingham, Manchester and Heathrow. Airlines that fly direct are Air France, Swiss, Sterling, Meridian, Lufthansa, KLM, Brussels Airlines and Austrian Airlines. There is less competition then there is with flights to major Italian cities, like Milan and Madrid, so you should expect moderate prices, with the occasional bargain. You should also consider booking your hotel and flights in advance to give you the best possible price, especially in the summer where there are many tourists. You can enter the country with a valid UK passport with no restrictions.

Climate

Florence has a hot summer, which can be humid and sticky. In the summer months from June to August, the temperature can reach the 30s degrees centigrade making it popular with UK tourists at least. In spring and early autumn, the weather is moderate and there is a greater chance of rainfall, so bear this in mind when packing. Florence is extremely popular in summer because of the warm weather so be prepared for lots of tourists and higher prices. Consider going off peak for the best price and bearable weather.

What to do

There are some very famous sites to visit if you are in Florence. The Ponte Vecchio is an old bridge that was built in 1345 and was the first one that crossed the famous Arno River (made extremely famous in EM Forster’s novel, A Room with a View, with a large part of the story taking part in Florence). Nowadays, the river Arno has many shops and stalls down the riverside that are worth a visit.

If you like art there are two galleries which are a must visit; the Galleria Degli Uffzi, holding some of the older renaissance art pieces as well as work from Da Vinci, Raphael and Botticelli. It is a very busy museum so book ahead. There is also the Galleria dell’Academia, also showing some famous sculptures and paintings by Michelangelo and other artists. Call ahead to find out the opening times.

You must also visit the famous square called the Piazza della Signoria, where the famous statue, a copy of Michelangelo’s David is held. It also has an old looking building which is the town hall and is a place for much of the politics in the city. There are plenty of places to eat and shop nearby to the Piazza. If you need even more shopping choices, then visit the Piazza San Lorenzo, where there are lots of things to buy. It is also famous for its leather goods; bags and clothes.
