Destinations in Italy
The southern Italian city of Naples is picturesque and is known for its art, architecture, food and culture. The centre of Naples is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because nearby lies the archaeological sites of Herculaneum, Torre Annunziata and Pompeii. It is fairly popular but not quite as much as the other Italian cities like Venice and Rome and therefore is far quieter during the summer months. This means you can have a quieter holiday in general if you want to avoid the crowds.
Flights
Naples is a fairly popular destination although it’s not as well known as the likes of Venice and Rome. The peak season is the summer, from July to September, when the weather is hot and humid. In august, a lot of Italians will go on holiday. Therefore there will be closures where hotels and shops are involved if you visit during this month. Accommodation will be booked up so do make sure you can book early and in advance. The colder seasons from November to March are off peak, and the weather tends to be damp but there will be fewer tourists to contend with. Some of the airlines that will fly to Naples include KLM, Jet2 and Air France. Most of the major airport destinations in the UK will be covered so you should be able to fly from a location closest to you. Their local airport is the Naples Capodichino which is 5 miles from the city centre.
Climate
Naples has lots of different weather for the different seasons. In the summer, it is warm and hot, especially during July and August. Here the weather can reach into the 30s degree centigrade. The winters are chilly and there tends to be a lot of rain. Most of the rainfall is during colder months, and there can be windy spells too. If you want to travel at this time remember to take warm clothing and an umbrella!
What to do
Naples is known for its food and especially its pizza, since the food originated from the city.
If you like nature, take a walk around the city and also visit the Royal Botanic Gardens, which has 10,000 samples of plants from around the world. If you prefer something older, then take a look at the Museo Nazionale, which has ancient artefacts from Pompeii and Greek sculptures. There is also an Egyptian collection.
There are some neighbouring islands called Ischia and Capri that are popular with tourists; Ischia for example is a live spa and the island receives around 2.5 million visitors a year who go to try the steam baths and mud baths.
Naples also has the only active volcano in Europe, called the Vesuvius. This is a grand and spectacular site – but since it is still an active volcano, it can also be dangerous so you need to find out about the current status before travelling to see it. The volcano is famed for destroying the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
