Pisa is an Italian city located in central Italy, near Tuscany. It is know for the famous leaning tower of Pisa, which is actually a bell tower. In addition, Pisa is near some beaches and the sea, meaning there is always a pleasant breeze from the coasts and has many stunning pieces of architecture scattered around the city.

Flights

You can fly to Pisa direct with Easyjet, Ryanair and Jet2. Flights are normally more affordable the sooner you book, although last minute bargains are to be had. The local airport is Galileo Galilei. During the peak season, during the summer, flights are busy so be aware it’s harder to find a cheap flight then. You can fly from all the major international airports in the UK to Pisa. You should have no problems entering the country using a valid UK passport.

Climate

The climate in Pisa is similar to the Mediterranean – in other words, hot sunny days during July to August, where the weather remains at 30 degrees centigrade and above. The low seasons, from September to April tend to have moderate weather, where it is pleasant and not too hot and there is minimal rainfall. Many people prefer this kind of weather as it is less humid and sunny. Off peak is also cheaper then the peak of summer. Remember that this makes things more expensive overall – August is also a holiday month in Italy which means that some restaurants and businesses will shut whilst the owners have a break. Be aware of this if you choose to travel then.

What to do

The leaning tower of Pisa is a worldwide landmark and is known for its famous stance. It was built in 1173, and took 200 years to build due to numerous interruptions. Originally, the tower was straight but because the soil is soft, it began to lean. It’s made of six levels and there are 300 steps that lead to the top, however, in 1990 the tower was closed due to health and safety. In 2001 the tower was reopened but it has limited opening times and you must book in advance.

Beware of eating near the tower and buying from the tourist shops there; they tend to charge high prices for somewhat low quality food compared to the real Italian stuff! You can always haggle when buying goods from a tourist shop or stand.

There is the Duomo di Pisa which is a cathedral and contains work from major artists, including a huge mosaic and a pulpit in late Gothic/renaissance style, by Giovanni Pisano.

Then there is the Teatro Verdi – here you can visit the site and enjoy dance and music. The theatre was founded in 1854. You can also go shopping down the Borgo Stretto – here is the main shopping street with lots of shops, bars and stalls to buy clothes and antiques. You can also stop here for food and drinks.
