Rome in Italy is a city that is steeped in history – it was once the centre of western civilisation. The city of Rome is filled with beautiful architecture and is home to the Vatican City, which is a place of religious worship for Catholics. Rome is a city that is known for being romantic as well as being a place of great history, making it the ideal destination for those who like a bit of everything.

Flights

Flights to Rome from the UK are common because it is such a popular destination. Easyjet, BMI and British Airways all fly to Rome for reasonable prices; the key is to either book very early or to leave it right to the last minute to get the lowest prices. Easter is the peak season so it’s the busiest period and the most expensive to fly to Rome. Remember that even if you get a cheap flight at the time your accommodation may be at a premium so try to book before you go. Off season is Late October to Easter, but remember that some hotels and restaurants will close during November and February. Therefore if you go off peak there may be fewer attractions but you will have to spend less lime queuing and waiting for things that are open. You can fly from most major UK cities although you will need to check first to make sure the airline flies from your nearest airport. Rome’s airport is the Fiumicino which is the largest in Italy.

Climate

Rome has a Mediterranean climate, which means that it is warm throughout the summer and this carries on into October. In the warmest month, August, the temperature exceeds 32 degrees centigrade. However, many businesses are shut during August, the owners taking holidays in these months themselves, but recently more stores are staying open during this month. If you prefer gentler weather go during March – April where the weather in comfortable. During the winter, the weather is moderate and it can get fairly chilly.

What to do

Rome is filled with amazing architecture, many dating thousands of years old. Here are just a few you must visit for the true Rome experience.

The Pantheon was built by the Romans in 27 BC, and is known as the temple of all gods. It was turned into a church where important people were later buried. Admission is free. Then there is the coliseum; the world’s greatest amphitheatre. It was built to house 45,000 – 50,000 spectators to watch people fight with lions and each other. This was a stadium built for the gladiators.

Don’t forget the smaller monuments like The Mouth of Truth; this marble mask represents a river god. Apparently any liar that puts their hand in the mouth will have it eaten by the statue!

Also visit Vatican City. Vatican City is actually a country within its own right, even though it is known as a Micro state with the EU. Only 558 citizens live in the city, and it homes the Sistine chapel, one of the oldest buildings in the city.

Rome is also filled with restaurants and shops – after all Italy is known for its fine leather and clothing so there is plenty for the keen shopper too.
