Venice is perhaps one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Known for being romantic, the city of Venice is full of beautiful buildings and gondolas; the canals run through the city. Venice is split into six different quarters, and each have slightly different feels. These areas are San Marco (the most popular), Dordoduro, Santa Croce (made famous in EM Forster’s book, A Room with a View) Cannaregio, Castello and San Polo. One you arrive in the city it’s as if you have arrived in a new world.

Flights

As Venice is popular, the flight prices are affordable but it can be busy near peak season during the summer. Accommodation will be booked up so do make sure you can book early and in advance. Some of the airlines that will fly to Venice include KLM, Jet2, Air France and Easyjet. Most of the major airport destinations in the UK will be covered so you should b able to fly from a location closest to you. Their local airport is the Venice Marco Polo Airport which is 10 miles from Venice.

Climate

Venice has a Mediterranean climate, and the summers can get very hot. During July and August the temperature reaches 20 degrees centigrade and above. As there is a problem with pollution in the small city, there can be a lot of fogginess and humidity. In the afternoons there can be thunderstorms due to the humidity. During the winter there is rain and in November and December, flooding can occur. Spring is usually a comfortable time to visit the city. Generally Venice is popular all year round, although April to October is the busiest. Summer is very busy and hot and you need to find accommodation in advance for a good price. Off season is Nov-Dec, but remember there is flooding and dampness. However, it is much more affordable at this time. Ds?

What to do

Venice is picturesque and is full of bridges that are worth visiting. Look out for the Grand Canal which is the main street and has lots of stunning houses. If you want to take a gondola ride (and who doesn’t?) then negotiate the fee – quite often there is no fixed price and you may be charged a higher price if people see you are a British tourist so remember to negotiate then agree on a total price.

If you like to shop visit the Rialto Market – this is a food market where Venetians buy their groceries. Venice is full of antique stores with interesting goods to buy and take home. Remember to haggle the price if it is a stall. If you like guided tours, try the Secret Itineraries tour of the Doge which will take you all round the city, from visiting the main administrative offices to the prison cell of Casanova, the famous writer and infamous womaniser.

Another interesting fact about Venice is that it’s known as a sinking city; frequent flooding is suggesting that the city will one day end up under the sea.
