Destinations in Kosovo
Since 1999 Kosovo has been under the governance of the UN because the territory is disputed. Kosovo has declared its independence as a country in the Balkans region of Central Europe, though this independence from Serbia has not been recognised. Though it’s perfectly ok to visit Kosovo, you may have more trouble getting in than other European countries.
Flights to Kosovo
The main point of entry in Kosovo is near the capital city of Pristina, at the Pristina International Airport (airport code: PRN). It’s situated 10 miles (16km) outside the city, and handles more than a million passengers each year. There is plenty of choice for flights to Kosovo, and though many are indirect from the UK, British Airways does have a direct fight to Kosovo. A transfer in Vienna is an option when flying with Austrian Airlines. Lufthansa has a 2-stop route, and their flight to Kosovo will connect in Dusseldorf and then Vienna.
Kosovo Tourist Attractions
With the current situation in Kosovo it isn’t the most frequented country in Europe, but things have been relatively peaceful here so visiting shouldn’t be any more dangerous than visiting most other countries. With fewer tourists coming, now could be a really good time to visit Kosovo as the sights will be quieter and you’ll have more opportunity to get to know the locals. And, getting to know the locals is certainly something you’ll have to consider if you want to tour around the country because tourist services can be few and far between outside of the major cities.
Pristina
Pristina is the capital and largest city in Kosovo and being home to the country’s international airport most tourists’ first impression of Kosovo will be Pristina. The city does have some attractions but it doesn’t have much in the way of historic char. The main sights include a huge portrait of Bill Clinton, the Skenderbeg Monument, the Kosovo Museum, the Clock Tower, and Germi Park.
Peja
A city with a beautiful setting is Peja, in the west of Kosovo. It’s framed against the Accursed Mountains so it’s a very scenic area, and the city has historical buildings and more to see too. There are numerous 15th century buildings here which were built during the Ottoman rule, and there are mosques and a monastery as well. In the mountains Rugova Canyon is particularly popular, as one of Kosovo’s top tourist attractions.
Prizren
The city of Prizren is also historic and has lots to see. This is one of the oldest cities in Kosovo and has many buildings and mosques dating back to the 14th century. It too has an Ottoman influence so there are numerous mosques, as well as Turkish baths where you can see the history and be treated to a Turkish bath yourself! Among the mosques to look out for there’s the very beautiful Mosque of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, built in the 14th century, and the largest mosque in the city, the Mosque of Sinan Pasha.
When Should You Visit Kosovo?
Kosovo has a continental climate so if you’re hoping to enjoy some sightseeing or hiking in the scenic mountains you’d best visit during the summer when temperatures are warm to hot. If you like cold and snowy weather then come to Kosovo in the winter.
