The Republic of Latvia is situated in Northern Europe in the Baltic Region and has a long coastline on the Baltic Sea. Estonia, Lithuania, Belarus and the Russian Federation have borders with Latvia and though the country is most visited for its beautiful capital city there are many other things to see here too.

Flights to Latvia

Riga International Airport (airport code: RIX) is the largest airport in Latvia and the main entry point for international flights to Latvia. It’s located just 6 miles outside the city centre and there are buses and taxis available for the transfer. From the UK there are numerous European airlines offering direct or indirect routes. Air Baltic and discount airline Ryanair both offer direct flights to Latvia from the UK, and Wizz Air has just recently introduced a route from Luton. For a flight to Latvia with one connection you can look to LOT-Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, BMI, Aeroflot, or British Airways.

Latvia Tourist Attractions

Latvia is a country full of scenic beauty and attractive cities. Its capital, Riga, is the top tourist destination in Latvia though with so much else to see it would be a shame to focus your visit just on this city.

Riga

Both the capital and the largest city of Latvia, Riga has much to offer. The Old Town, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is where most visitors will head and it’s particularly famous for its German art nouveau architectural style. The quaint narrow streets are lined with colourful buildings, making this a lovely city to simply wander around. Specific sites to head for include Riga Castle, the Lutheran Cathedral, and Saint Peter’s Church. From the latter you can enjoy wonderful city views while the Lutheran Cathedral is the largest in the Baltic States with sections dating right back to the 13th century.

Sigulda

As well as Riga you’ll find numerous other pretty towns and cities in Latvia, and Sigulda is one of them. Situated 60 miles from Riga this beautiful city is nicknamed the Switzerland of Latvia for its surrounding natural beauty and architecture. Sights include a couple of castles – Sigulda New Castle in the town centre, adjacent to the old medieval castle that’s now in ruins. A little way outside the town is another castle, Turaida Castle, which is loved for the great views from here.

Sigulda is close to one of Latvia’s four national parks, the Guaja National Park, where you can enjoy more of the country’s natural beauty. Also close by to Sigulda is the Guaja Valley which you can cross via a scenic cable car.

Latvia’s Baltic Coast

Latvia’s extensive coastline on the Baltic Sea offers even more scenery, and more of its popular towns and cities. Amongst these Liepaja is reputed to be the most popular and has an amazing soft, white sandy beach. Nearby is an interesting attraction, a former secret military town called Karosta.

When Should You Visit Latvia?

During the summer Latvia can be quite warm, considering its fairly northern position, and although this is a good time to visit July and August are the wettest months of the year. Spring and autumn are usually mild, but winter is not a good time to visit due to extreme weather often blowing in from the interior of Russia.
