Riga is home to the Riga International Airport (airport code: RIX), the busiest airport in Latvia. Located just 6 miles outside the city centre, transport to and from the city is easy via buses and taxis. Air Baltic and Ryanair both offer direct flights to Riga from the UK, as well as Wizz Air, flying direct to Riga from Luton Airport. A number of airlines also provide one stop flights to Riga including BMI, Aeroflot, British Airways, Lufthansa, and LOT-Polish Airlines.

Riga Tourist Attractions

Offering over 800 years of history Riga is a city that’s certainly rich in history and culture, and the Historic Centre was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites for its cultural importance in 1997. Though popular before that time, since then Riga has become one of Europe’s popular short break destinations and has plenty of character to enjoy, particularly the old German art nouveau architecture that it’s famous for.

Riga Old Town

As you might expect, the Old Town is at the heart of tourism in Riga and is where many visitors spend the majority of their time. Numerous churches, museums and other pretty buildings can be seen here so there’s more than enough to fill several days of sightseeing in the Old City alone. Even if you don’t head for any specific sights you can enjoy the ambiance and colourful buildings as you take a stroll around the Old Town, enjoying the fact that this is a mainly pedestrian area.

Saint Peter’s Church is one of the most popular attractions. As well as being the oldest church in Riga, built in 1209, its tall tower offers wonderful city views and is accessible via a far more modern elevator taking you to a height of 123 metres (404 feet)!

Riga Castle is another attraction and though the castle is not as spectacular as many found across Latvia it does contain two interesting museums, the National History Museum of Latvia, and the Museum of Foreign Art.

Elsewhere in Riga

Riga Radio and TV Tower offers spectacular views, similar to those from the tower of Saint Peter’s Church. Standing at a maximum height of 368.5 metres (1209 ft), this is the third tallest tower in Europe and the observation deck is situated at a height of 97 metres.

Riga Zoo is popular with families visiting Riga and it’s home to over 3000 animals from nearly 500 different species. The zoo is located within the Mezaparks neighbourhood of Riga where you’ll also find a lake with water based activities, and an amusement park.
