Lithuania Tourist Attractions
While not immediately considered one of the top European travel destinations Lithuania actually has a lot to offer visitors who want to experience something a little different. There’s substantial scenic beauty in Lithuania and a rich cultural heritage that’s a combination of the different cultures who have lived here over the centuries. Lithuania was the first country to declare independence from the USSR in 1990 and has successfully managed itself as a republic since then.
Vilnius
The capital and largest city of Lithuania is Vilnius and this is probably the country’s top tourist destination. It has an attractive Old Town where there are many historic buildings and churches which date from anywhere between the 13th and the 19th centuries. St Anne’s Church is often described as the most beautiful in Vilnius though you should also visit others such as St Peter and St Paul’s Church. The cathedral, Archcathedral Basilica, is a particularly well known landmark, as is Three Crosses Hill.
Make sure you take the funicular (or walk) up to Gediminas Tower and the castle on top of a hill overlooking the city as there are some excellent city views from up here.
Lithuania’s National Parks
Lithuania is proud of its varied scenic beauty and has established several national parks to ensure that they stay scenic and untouched. There are five national parks in total, each offering something a little different. There are sand dunes and rare flowers on the white sandy beaches at the Jursiu Nerija National Park, also known as Curonian Spit, while Dzukija National Park was established to preserve pine forests and villages of the region.
Trakai National Historic Park is good for history lovers as it includes several historic villages and Trakai Island Castle, in addition to plenty of scenic beauty. Aukstaitija National Park also includes villages, 116 in total, plus many lakes and rivers that make this a great destination for boating.
When Should You Visit Lithuania?
Lithuania is nice to visit during the summer when temperatures are warm. Averages are not excessive, though Lithuania can experience extremes every now and then, both in the summer and winter, when temperatures can suddenly get very hot or very cold. Winters are on average cool to cold.
