Vilnius Tourist Attractions
Vilnius Old Town
For many visitors the main attraction in Vilnius is the Old Town. This has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994 and it’s one of the largest surviving medieval old towns in Northern Europe. The Old Town does not just date from one period in history but many and so it’s developed with numerous different architectural and cultural influences over time. Pilies Street is the main street running through this historic district and you’ll find some lovely cafés and shops along here.
Town Hall Square and Cathedral Square are the main squares in the Old Town, and as their names would suggest they house the town hall and the cathedral! Vilnius Cathedral and its Bell Tower are very attractive and one of the city’s major landmarks.
Other landmarks in the Old Town include palaces and churches such as the beautiful St Anne’s Church which is said to be the most attractive church in Vilnius, and even Lithuania. There are several palaces including the Presidential Palace, and the Vilnius Castle Complex. From the higher castle you can get some great city views.
The castles are all part of the National Museum of Lithuania which includes many displays and exhibits concentrating on the history and culture of Lithuania.
Other Museums in Vilnius
In addition to the main National Museum of Lithuania, Vilnius is also home to several other museums. The country’s largest art collection is housed within the Lithuanian Art Museum, while the Museum of Genocide Victims is dedicated to the victims who were killed during the Soviet occupation of Lithuania.
Vilnius’ Parks and Cemeteries
Vilnius has numerous parks and cemeteries which may not immediately sound appealing as a tourist destination, but the cemeteries in particular hold much history and are now remembered as a part of the history of Lithuania. Among these is Ross Cemetery, Antakalnis Cemetery, and Bernardine Cemetery.
