Luxembourg Tourist Attractions
Being such a small country Luxembourg is not overwhelmed with things to see and do, but it does have a great scenic beauty that can be enjoyed and admired no matter where you are situated in the country. Most visitors to Luxembourg will tend to visit Luxembourg City, the capital and largest city of the nation, which offers a variety of historical and cultural sites, including Luxembourg Castle. Apart from Luxembourg City there are several other destinations you might like to consider visiting, including the following:
Echternach
The town of Echtarnech is Luxembourg’s oldest and it’s located in the far east of the country near the border with Germany. The town was founded when a monastery was built here in the year 698, and the abbey still exists though today it’s a school building. The small museum next door can tell you more about the history of the town.
Elsewhere in the town you’ll find pretty buildings and streets with squares, while 20 minutes walk outside the centre is the remains of a Roman villa.
Vianden
Vianden is another town worth visiting because of its stunning setting on the River Our. This is actually one of the top places to visit for tourists in Luxembourg and is most famous for its magnificent castle that stands on a hill overlooking the town and the river.
Diekirch
If you’re interested in military history then a visit to Diekirch should be on your list. This town is home to the National Museum of Military History and it’s largely focused on the Battle of the Bulge that took place here in Luxembourg.
Luxembourg City
In comparison to the smaller towns Luxembourg City has numerous attractions to see. It’s listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its fortifications, called Casements Bock; an underground network of tunnels built in the 18th century. The Grand Ducal Palace is another top site, originating from 1572, while the Cathedral of Notre Dame was started in 1613. The re-built Fort Thungen is also popular and other attractions in Luxembourg City include Adolphe Bridge, and several museums.
When Should You Visit Luxembourg?
Luxembourg has a fairly mild climate so you could visit this country year round. In reality the best times to visit are during the summer when temperatures can be quite high, often peaking at around 35C in July and August. Rainfall is fairly high and consistent throughout the year so be prepared for this.
