Macedonia is another of Europe’s emerging tourist markets that was formerly part of Yugoslavia. It’s located on the Balkan Peninsula in south-eastern Europe and has plenty to offer visitors including some beautiful scenery.

Flights to Macedonia

Macedonia has just one international airport and it’s located in the capital, Skopje, and named the Alexander the Great Airport (airport code: SKP). The airport is about 12 miles outside of the city centre. From the UK there are currently no direct flights to Macedonia instead travellers will need one of two connections before arriving there. However there are still a number of airlines offering flights to Macedonia including Macedonian Airlines via Zurich and BMI via Vienna, as well as routes with British Airways, Austrian, and Lufthansa.

Macedonia Tourist Attractions

Macedonia may be a landlocked country with a sea or ocean coastline, but it more than makes up for this with its lakes. There are many beautiful lakes in Macedonia and plenty of attractive towns lining those lakes, making for a scenic and culturally rich holiday.

History, culture, national parks and more will mean that a holiday in Macedonia will appeal to many different tastes.

Skopje

Starting with the capital, as this is where flights to Macedonia land, this historical city unfortunately suffered a huge earthquake in 1963 in which many of the older parts of the city were ruined. Since then there’s been lots of construction and although the streets of Skopje may be unappealing to tourists looking for an truly attractive Balkan city, it still offers plenty of historical attractions though. Kale Fortress is one, and it dates from between the 10th and 13th centuries and offers fantastic views over the city.

The Stone Bridge is another famous landmark, and it was built in the 6th century by the Byzantines, while nearby you’ll find the Old Bazaar which is one of the largest of its kind in the Balkans and a great place to shop! There are also many Ottoman buildings and mosques, churches, and Turkish baths to enjoy.

Orhid and Lake Orhid

One of the top tourist destinations in Macedonia is the town of Orhid on the shores of Lake Orhid. Both the town and the lake are popular, and the town itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical and cultural importance. Some archaeological digs have discovered that Orhid is one of the oldest settlements in Europe and it contains historical monuments from more recent history such as Samuil’s Fortress and the Antique Theatre.

While the town is popular, so too is the lake, especially during the summer when the beaches are bustling!

National Parks of Macedonia

Apart from the great beauty of places like Lake Orhid, Macedonia has 3 national parks and a total of 33 nature reserves, all featuring some spectacular scenery and abundant bird and wildlife. Mavrovo National Park is the largest and it has lakes, rivers, waterfalls, gorges and caves to explore.

Close by the Orhid is Galicica National Park which as well as its plentiful flora and fauna offers great views over Lake Orhid and the town.

When Should You Visit Macedonia?

Macedonia’s location in Europe means it has a partly Mediterranean and partly continental climate. For most of Macedonia this means warm to hot summers that are mostly dry, and cold, wet winters.
