Skopje Tourist Attractions
Prior to 1963 Skopje would have offered far more in the way of historical attractions than it now does but unfortunately the city was hit by a major earthquake that levelled much of the city within minutes. Re-building quickly happened so on first impressions you may think Skopje is just a mass of ugly concrete buildings, however, under the surface there are actually still a good number of historical buildings and landmarks to enjoy.
Skopje Old Town and Bazaar
The main feature of Skopje’s Old Town these days is the Old Bazaar which was at the heart of the city in its glory days between the 16th and 17th centuries. The bazaar is one of the largest and most significant of its kind in the Balkans and even today you can enjoy shopping for the wide variety of goods that are sold here from its many shops.
The Stone Bridge
One of Skopje’s major landmarks is the Stone Bridge and it’s always played an important part in the city. Nowadays it’s the bridge between the older and the more modern parts of Skopje, and is the emblem of the city. It was built between 1451 and 1469 and connects the Old Bazaar to Macedonia Square, the largest square in the city.
Macedonia Square
Since several of this square’s major buildings were destroyed by the 1963 earthquake the Stone Bridge is very much the focus of a visit here now. There are plans to rebuild some buildings, and to erect monuments and other sites of interest.
Kale Fortress
Kale Fortress is another famous landmark in Skopje. From the hill it sits upon you can get some great views over the city. The fortress was built originally in the 6the century by the Byzantines, and since the earthquake some portions have been rebuilt.
Skopje Museums
To experience some of Skopje’s culture there are several museums to visit while in the city. These include the Museum of Contemporary Arts Skopje which is one of the most important museums in Macedonia. There are also museums focusing on the city’s and country’s history including the Natural History Museum, and the Museum of Macedonia.
