Situated on the central eastern coast of the island of Malta is Valletta. This is the capital city of Malta, an island nation set in the Mediterranean, and it’s steeped in history and culture. Combine this with Valletta’s warm weather and the fact that English is one of the official languages, and you have a popular tourist destination.

Flights to Valletta

Malta International Airport (airport code: MLA) is located just 3 miles outside of Valletta and it’s connected to the city via a public bus service or taxis. From the UK there are many options for direct flights to Valletta, departing from numerous different cities within the UK, and including scheduled, charter, and low cost airlines. Easyjet and Ryanair both offer flights to Valletta, as do Thomsonfly, Thomas Cook Airlines, and BMIBaby. The other option is to use Malta’s national airline, Air Malta, who also have flights to Valletta from several different UK cities.

Valletta Tourist Attractions

As well as being the capital city of Malta, Valletta is popular because of its many historical and cultural attractions. Most of the city has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of this rich cultural history which began with the Knights Hospitaller in 1566. There are still many buildings in Valletta that date from this period, even though many parts of the city were badly damaged in the Second World War. Here are the details of some of Valletta’s top tourist attractions.

St John’s Co-Cathedral

Probably Valletta’s most recognised landmark and most visited attraction is St John’s Cathedral. This was built as the religious home of the Knights Hospitaller (also known as the Knights of St John), between 1573 and 1578. The outside of the cathedral, though attractive, is not indicative of what’s inside, so you must make sure you go inside when it’s open to the public from Monday to Saturday. Once inside you’ll find a beautiful and highly ornate interior with vaulted ceilings and frescoes, and eight chapels. The entrance fee includes an audio guide, which is recommended. Also recommended is a visit to the adjacent Cathedral Museum where there are two works of art by the famous artist Caravaggio on display.

Museums in Valletta

As well as the Cathedral Museum there are several others in Valletta which are worth taking the time to visit. There is the National War Museum, and the National Museum of Archaeology. This one has artefacts and displays that date right back to prehistoric times.

The National Museum of Fine Arts is impressive too, and one of its most famous paintings is the Grand Harbour, by JMW Turner.

Other Valletta Landmarks

Among Valletta’s other landmarks are its palaces. There are several to see though not all are open to the public. The Grandmaster’s Palace is partially open for tours, even though it is home to the House of Representative’s and the office of the president of Malta. Case Rocco Piccola is still lived in by a noble family, but even so it is open for daily tours, making this an interesting visit.

When Should You Visit Valletta?

As with the rest of Malta, Valletta enjoys a Mediterranean climate that gives the city warm and quite dry summers, and mild, wet winters. Summer is definitely the peak season so this means it will be busier. To avoid some of the crowds, consider coming to Valletta in the spring or autumn, when temperatures are pleasant.
