The Netherlands Tourist Attractions
Amsterdam
The city of Amsterdam is by far the most popular destination in the Netherlands and rightly so with its many different attractions and vibrant culture on offer. Amsterdam is both the capital and largest city of the Netherlands and is famous for several things – its canals, its museums, and its liberal attitudes.
A boat trip along the many canals of Amsterdam is a must-do as this is a lovely way to see parts of the city from the water. Sightseeing around Amsterdam by bicycle is also popular, plus you can easily see the centre of the city on foot then take a tram to some of the further out areas such as to visit the Rijksmuseum.
The Rijksmuseum is just one of Amsterdam’s famous museums, others include Anne Frank’s House, Rembrandt House, the Sex Museum, and the Marijuana and Hemp Museum.
The Netherlands’ Other Cities
Once you’ve visited Amsterdam it’s interesting to see some of the country’s other cities as they all have something a little different to offer. For a very well preserved historic centre there’s the city of Delft, while Maastricht’s medieval history and architecture makes this a special place too. Rotterdam has a more modern feel than the others and features the largest port in Europe.
Efteling
More well known among the Dutch than international visitors to the Netherlands is Efteling. This is a theme park that’s based on a fairy tale theme and is lots of fun for the whole family, whatever age you are. There are typical theme park attractions including roller coasters and other rides, plus family entertainment.
National Parks of the Netherlands
The Netherlands is not just about cities; it’s a scenic country best known for being very flat and featuring plenty of windmills. There are actually 20 national parks in the Netherlands which is incredible considering the country’s relatively small size. The largest is Hoge Veluwe National Park and it’s an attractive place to visit as it has a mix of woodlands, heathlands and sand dunes.
When Should You Visit the Netherlands?
The Netherlands is a country that can be visited all year round as it has a relatively mild climate. Summers are the most popular time as the weather is usually warm and sunny, but spring and autumn can be a good time to visit too. Winters are not out of the question as the weather is still mild, however, bear in mind that November is on average the wettest month and February the driest.
