Maastricht is a charming historical city in the south east of the Netherlands and is abundant in history, culture and folklore, making this one of the Netherlands’ most popular tourist attractions.

Flights to Maastricht

The Maastricht Aachen Airport (airport code: MST) is used only by smaller airlines, offering holiday flights to Maastricht from several European cities, but none in the UK. Your best option for a flight to Maastricht would be to arrive in a different city then to rent a car or take a train. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (code: AMS) is one option and from there it’s a 3-hour train ride to Maastricht, or closer cities include Rotterdam and Eindhoven, or even Brussels in neighbouring Belgium. To Amsterdam, non-stop flights are available with KLM, EasyJet, FlyBe, Jet2, BMI Baby and British Airways, for various airports in the UK.

Maastricht Tourist Attractions

Maastricht is debated to be the oldest city in the Netherlands, competing with Nijmegen for the title, but whether Maastricht wins this fight, it is undoubtedly the oldest settlement in the country and for tourists it is full of history and charming architecture that manages to attract thousands of visitors every year. There are a number of important landmarks, but even if you simply wander the streets of Maastricht you’ll be treated to some lovely buildings.

Old City Fortifications

Maastricht’s city fortifications date from several periods in history, going back as far as the 13th century; and a major landmark from this century includes the old Helpoort, a town gate, which is the oldest in the Netherlands. There are parts of the medieval walls that were added later and can still be seen today, and later still, some remains from the 17th and 18th centuries also still exist.

Guided tours of the Maastricht Casements are popular, giving tourists the chance to explore these underground tunnels where guns and ammunitions would have been stored.

Sint Pieter

In a neighbourhood of Maastricht called Sint Pieter there are several attractions include the hill, named Sint Pietersberg, and the fully restored Fort Sint-Pieter. It dates from the 18th century and was fully restored in 2008. This Maastricht neighbourhood also has many nice homes and villas and has always been known for having wealthy residents.

Another attraction is the Caves of Sint Pietersberg which is a series of man made tunnels and they are open for guided tours.

Maastricht Landmarks

Among the many other notable landmarks within Maastricht there are two city squares, Vrijthof Square and Market Square. The former is home to the Basilica of Saint Servatius which dates from the 11th century and is an impressive Romanesque style church.

The Market Square benefited from an overhaul in the mid 2000s, making it a traffic free tourist attraction, and its main landmark is the Town Hall, dating from the 17th century.

As well as purporting to be the oldest city in the Netherlands, Maastricht also claims to have the oldest bridge. Admittedly Sint Servaasbrug dates originally from the late 1280s, but it has been rebuilt and refurbished several times since. Still, it’s an attractive and popular landmark.

When Should You Visit Maastricht?

Maastricht is warm in the summer months when average highs around the low 20’s C, so this is often the most popular time to visit. Whenever you come, bring an umbrella as rain can fall throughout the year. Temperatures remain mild across the year too, with weather much like that of London.
