Situated in the west of the Netherlands, in the province of South Holland, is the city of Rotterdam. It’s the second largest city in the country and boasts the largest port in Europe. Rotterdam has many museums and some great architecture and culture to enjoy.

Flights to Rotterdam

It's the third largest airport in the Netherlands, and the Rotterdam the Hague Airport (airport code: RTM) is about 6 kilometres north of the city. There are several public bus lines servicing the airport, as well as taxis for easy access. VLM Airlines and CityJet has non-stop flights to Rotterdam from London, and British Airways has a route with 1 transfer. Their flights to Rotterdam connect in Hamburg. The low-cost Dutch airline, Transavia, also has regular service between the two cities.

Rotterdam’s Museums

Rotterdam is a culturally rich city with many museums on offer, making this a favourite destination for culture lovers! The history of Rotterdam can be explored at Het Schielandshuis, while the Museums De Dubbelse Palmboom examines the growth of Rotterdam into the major city port of today.

You can also find out more about this side of life in Rotterdam at the Maritime Museum. There are indoor exhibits that are informative and interesting, as well as outdoor exhibits that include a restored 19th century gunboat.

There are even more museums concentrating on transportation in Rotterdam too. These include the largest indoor model railway of the Netherlands at Railz Miniworld, and a collection of old steam locomotives at SSN Museumstoomdepot.

Away from the transport theme you can also visit the more usual arts museums such as the Centre for Contemporary Arts, and the World Arts Museum, and for a taste of natural history Rotterdam has the Natural History Museum.

Landmarks in Rotterdam

There are numerous landmarks that take on a broad selection of architectural styles here in Rotterdam. Rotterdam City Hall is one of the best known and it’s in the art deco style, and was built in 1914. You can go inside the city hall and view some of the public areas if you’d like to.

Rotterdam is well known for its windmills, so if you’ve ever wanted to see a windmill now is your chance! There are seven windmills in Rotterdam that you can see from the outside, and of these two are open regularly to the public; De Steer and De Lelie Windmills.

Rotterdam Zoo

Rotterdam Zoo is one of the original tourist attractions in Rotterdam and it has been entertaining visitors since opening in 1857. The exhibits have been updated substantially since that time, and now feature some very nice natural habitats, and a popular oceanarium.

Those interested in more natural attractions can also visit several gardens in Rotterdam. There’s a small botanical garden called Botanische Tuin Kralingen, as well as a larger arboretum that’s been established since 1820, called Arboretum Trompenburg.

When Should You Visit Rotterdam?

August can be a good time to visit as there are warm temperatures and a little less rain falling at this time. The average high is 22C. Temperatures are similar in June and July too, while the rest of the year it is mild to cool.
