Located on the south west coast of Norway is the country’s second largest city, Bergen. Bergen is well known as the gateway to the beautiful fjords, as well as being a popular tourist destination for its attractive historic centre.

Flights to Bergen

The Bergen Airport, Flesland (airport code: BGO) is the second-busiest in Norway and is located 7.5 miles (12km) outside the city. There are bus services, taxis and rental cars for easy access. Most flights to Bergen from the UK have one transfer, though there are a couple of direct flights to Bergen also. BMI flies direct, as does Scandinavian Airlines, or Cimber Air connects in Billund, and Lufthansa makes its transfer in Frankfurt.

Bergen Tourist Attractions

Bryggen

The Bryggen part of Bergen is very popular as this is one of the oldest districts of the city and is situated on the waterfront. It’s been recognised for its historical and cultural importance and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The district dates back to 1350 and although there have been a number of fires here over the centuries there are still some lovely old buildings to see. The historic architecture and colourful paints of the terrace of old buildings makes this a very photographic area, and you can go inside the old buildings as many of them are still being used as shops and restaurants today.

To find out more about what life would have been like here hundreds of years ago you should visit the district museum, the Bryggens Museum.

The Fish Market

Nearby, and right on Bergen’s water’s edge also, is the Fish Market. Historically this would have been where all the day’s catches were sold to trade and the public, but its importance has dwindled over the years. Today it’s still a historic part of the city and popular with tourists who come here to shop, but if you want he best seafood you should probably head to a different part of Bergen instead.

Bergen Aquarium

A short walk away from the historic heart of the city is the Bergen Aquarium. Though not one of the largest aquariums it is a fun and family friendly attraction that’s great for those visiting with children or who have an interest in the local marine life. Norwegian sea life does feature, along with species from around the world, plus there’s a shark tank and tunnel, as well as penguins and seals that you can see up close when it’s feeding time.

Floibanen

As well as the architectural attractions, Bergen is a very scenic city too. It’s the gateway to the fjords for one thing, and during the summer you can take a boat trip out to the fjords from Bergen. Another way to see some of the scenery is to take the funicular up to Floyen. This is a plateau on top of one of the surrounding mountains and from it you can get spectacular views over Bergen and beyond, on a clear day. There are hiking trails up here too and a restaurant plus a couple of other things to see and do.

When Should You Visit Bergen?

Bergen has somewhat of a reputation for rain, so be prepared for rainfall here whatever time of year you visit! Summers are mild to warm with an average high in July of 18C, making this the best time to visit Bergen for warmer weather. Even though Bergen is at an northerly latitude the city is warmer than you would expect and the average high over winter stays above freezing.
