Destinations in Norway
Norway is one of the Scandinavian countries, situated in Northern Europe. It’s a beautiful place to visit, famous for its fjords and other spectacular scenery, plus its friendly and welcoming Norwegians, vibrant cities and plenty of history and culture.
Flights to Norway
There are several airports in Norway, with more than one offering international flights to Norway from London. The largest is near Oslo, with the others located in Stavanger and Bergen. Most travel is through Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL) since Oslo is the capital city, and it’s the largest of the 3 airports. There are regular non-stop flights to Norway with British Airways and Scandinavia Airlines out of Heathrow airport, or from Gatwick you can catch a flight with Norwegian Air Shuttle. KLM, Swiss Air and Lufthansa all have flights to Norway with a single stop-over. For flight to Norway’s Stavanger airport instead of Oslo, British Midland has a non-stop flight, and KLM and Lufthansa both have flights with one connection.
Norway Tourist Attractions
Norway is a destination that will appeal to many different tourists’ tastes because there’s such a variety of attractions here. For those who enjoy history and culture the cities are perfect, while those who like scenery can head into the fjords. Outdoor enthusiasts will find there’s something to do in Norway during every season of the year, and the only thing stopping you do any more will be the unfortunate high cost of buying things in Norway; the only real drawback to visiting this country!
Oslo
For a taste of city life in Norway most tourists visit Oslo, though Bergen is a close second too. Oslo is the capital and the largest city in Norway and it has a lively cultural scene and a vibrant nightlife. This is a laid back city where you come and enjoy a coffee in one of the many cafés and restaurants or do some sightseeing of the major landmarks including the Royal Palace and the Parliament Building.
Bergen
Bergen is Norway’s second city and it too offers a variety of attractions making this just as popular as the capital. Bergen is the gateway to the fjords so it’s popular for this reason during the summer while all year round you can enjoy the mountains surrounding the city, as well as the culture and vibrant nightlife.
Historical Norway
If you’re looking for some of the quaint old architecture that Scandinavia is famous for you’ll find a fair amount in Bergen and Oslo but you might also want to visit the old towns of Frederikstad and Stavanger as these are really beautiful.
Norway’s Fjords
Norway is full of fantastic scenery, and national parks though it’s best known for the amazing fjords. You can travel to some of the best fjords from several points though Bergen is the most popular gateway and boats leave here regularly during the summer. All of the fjords are spectacular but if you visit only one make sure it’s Geirangerfjord as this is one of the most beautiful and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
When Should You Visit Norway?
As a tourist looking to see scenery and enjoy sightseeing and other attractions summer is the best time to come to Norway when temperatures are mild. Whatever time of year you’re visiting Bergen be prepared for rain as this is said to be the rainiest city in Europe! Winters are cold and snowy but this is good for winter sports if this is your reason for visiting Norway.
