Destinations in Norway
Oslo is situated in the south east of Norway and it’s the country’s capital and largest city. Oslo offers a god mix of attractions for tourists including a vibrant cultural scene, surrounding scenery, and history.
Flights to Oslo
Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL) is the largest airport in Norway, and is the main travel hub for the country and the entry point for international flights to Oslo. Unlike some major airports, Oslo Airport is located well outside the capital city. A 20 minute express train ride is the easiest transit route between the airport and the city. Non-stop flights to Oslo are fairly regular, with British Airways and Scandinavian Airlines coming from Heathrow. Norwegian Air Shuttle also offers direct flights to Oslo, but from Gatwick. Other options for flights to Oslo are KLM, Lufthansa and Swiss Air which all offer routes with a single connection. The connections may be in various European cities, such as Munich or Amsterdam.
Oslo Tourist Attractions
Oslo’s Museums
There are a number of very good museums in Oslo and these are perhaps a good place to start your visit to the city as they will help you to understand the history and culture of Oslo better. The Norwegian Museum of Cultural History is definitely one such museum that will appeal to visitors of all ages. This is actually an open air museum and has buildings from different periods in history. The Viking Ship Museum is also very good, giving you the chance to see two 1200 year old Viking ships, various artefacts and a Viking burial chamber.
For art lovers Oslo’s museums include the National Gallery where Norwegian and international artists are showcased. Norway’s most famous artist was Edward Munch and you can see numerous works by Munch in the Munch Museum.
Akershus Festning
Within Oslo’s castle, Akershus Festning, there are also a couple more museums. The castle you can see here today just outside the centre of Oslo dates from medieval times when it and the fortress were built in 1299. You can wander around the castle and enjoy the great fjord views from up here too.
The Royal Palace
The Royal Palace is one of the best known landmarks in Oslo. This beautiful and grand building is situated at the end of the main avenue in Oslo, called Karl Johans Gate, a bit like Buckingham Palace being at the end of Pall Mall! The palace is actually open for tours during the summer but it’s advisable to book your place on the tour in advance as they are very popular. The tickets are available from post offices in Oslo. English speaking tours start a couple of times a day but if you didn’t book in advance go along to the palace anyway to see if there are any spare places.
When Should You Visit Oslo?
Like the rest of Norway winters in Oslo are cool and snowy though being fairly far south it can be warmer here than in the rest of the country. The best time to visit Oslo for sightseeing is in the summer as some attractions are not open year round. Temperatures are mild, peaking in July with an average high of 21.5C, though it is rainy during the summer.
