Destinations in Poland
Situated in Central Europe, Poland is a country that has plenty of beautiful scenery, culturally rich cities, and one of the largest populations in the European Union. Still, it’s a great place to visit with lots of different attractions for the interested tourist.
Flights to Poland
Poland has many large airports throughout the country, with the largest being Frederic Chopin Airport (airport code: WAW) in the capital city of Warsaw. The other airports include Krakow-Balice (KRK) in Krakow, and Lech Walesa Airport (GDN) in Gdansk. Direct flights to Poland from the UK landing at Warsaw are available with LOT Polish Airlines and British Airways, or you can catch a flight to Poland with several other airlines involving one connection, such as KLM via Amsterdam, and Lufthansa via Munich. There are no direct flights to Poland when arriving at the Krakow-Balice airport, but several airlines to choose from for a 1 or 2 stop flight. Lufthansa stops in Munich, Austrian Air connects once in Vienna, and a flight with KLM will stop in Amsterdam and then Munich before arriving in Krakow.
Poland Tourist Attractions
From forests to coasts, cities and castles, there’s no shortage of attractions in Poland. The country is usually divided into five different regions, each of them offering something a little different to the last. Here are some of the highlights of those five regions:
Warsaw
Poland’s best known destination is its capital and largest city, Warsaw, in Central Poland. Its beautiful Old Town is a top attraction for tourists despite the fact that most of it was destroyed during the Second World War. They actually set about re-building it to its former glory and now it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Krakow
Considered to be the cultural capital of Poland, Krakow is one of Poland’s top tourist destinations due to largely to its wonderful historical centre with medieval market place, loads of old churches and other landmarks. Krakow is in Southern Poland and it’s a vibrant and friendly city where you can enjoy a drink with the locals! There are many museums including one of the city’s top attractions, Wawel Castle.
Gdansk
A popular town in Northern Poland is Gdansk, situated on the Baltic Sea coast. Like several other beautiful Polish cities Gdansk was destroyed during the war but has since been rebuilt and again features some beautiful and characterful buildings. Gdansk is also a good point from which to explore the Baltic Sea coast of Poland including its many seaside resorts.
Auschwitz
It was not the first or only concentration camp set up by the Nazis but Auschwitz is definitely one of the most famous. You can visit the complex of camps that were used to imprison and murder thousands of Jews and Poles, and see where the horror took place.
National Parks of Poland
On a happier note are the national parks of Poland, and there are an impressive 23 in total. These include the beautiful waterfalls of Karkonoski National Park, the ancient woodland of Bialowieza National Park which has also been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Slowinski National Park that contains the largest sand dunes in Europe.
When Should You Visit Poland?
Poland has a mostly temperate climate though the weather can vary from north to south. In the north, along the Baltic Sea it’s nice enough in the summer to enjoy the beaches, but is generally a few degrees cooler than further south. During the winter it can be cold but it’s less rainy during the winter than the summer.
