The Algarve is a region in the south of Portugal. It includes 16 municipalities including Faro, which is its capital. The Algarve is primarily a tourist and beach resort; this attracts tourists from all over the world to its warm climate and attractive beaches and a golf course. The Algarve also has a strong business growing fruit and seafood. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions and therefore it is fairly easy to get discounted flights to.

Flights

You can fly to the Algarve from a number of international airports in the U.K. such as Gatwick, Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh. There are lots of low cost airlines that offer flights such as Easyjet, Thompsonfly, Monarch, British Airways and BmiBaby. Ryan Air also offer flights but just from some locations in the UK; Luton, Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester. During the peak season in the summer, it can be very busy although there are always last minute flights to be had but if you leave it too late it can cost more. Hotels are also harder to locate the later you leave it. You can enter the country with a valid UK passport with no restrictions. There are no time difference between the UK and the Algarve.

What to do

The Algarve is a well known tourist destination for many European tourists especially the British who don’t have the benefit of hot consistent summers. There are also some great night clubs for younger tourists and golf courses for keen sports holidaymakers.

Being a beach resort there are plenty of white sands and blue seas to relax on. You can also take a boat ride on the Born Dia, a traditional sailing boat. There is also the Dolphin Safari trip, great for kids and adults, where you will take a boat out to see and meet some special animals. You can even take the Super Combi package, which is a way to try surfing; canoeing and taking the safari all in one go.

If you don’t like the coast visit Ria Formosa, which is a nature reserve just out of town – here are lots of birds and wildlife to see.

If you like wine, then there is the Adega do Cantor, the winery which makes wine for Cliff Richard, no less.

If you like to go for walks then check out the Serra de Cao, and the Praia de Luz to Burgau – these are hilly terrains on the west coast of the island.

Climate

The Algarve is a sunny resort and gives warm weather during the summer months from July to August, where the temperature is 20 degrees centigrade upwards. During the winter the weather is lower and more moderate and the rain will fall during the period. Generally it is very dry so you don’t need to worry about rain. If you visit during the colder months many of the amenities may be shut.
