Coimbra is a large urban city in Portugal, which is one of the lesser visited locations in the country. It is the third largest city and has one of the oldest Universities in Europe, called Coimbra University, and is one of the largest tourist attractions in the city. Coimbra is somewhat of a secret gem to UK travellers, so it’s a great place to visit to get a slice of Portuguese culture with the swarm of tourists that visit Lisbon and the Algarve.

Flights

You can fly to the Coimbra from a number of international airports in the UK including Gatwick and Heathrow. These airlines fly direct to Coimbra with TAP Portugal (www-tap-airportugal.co.uk). Because it is a lesser visited location, there are fewer cheap flights in comparison to other Portuguese locations. Therefore book in advance if you want to get a cheap flight. You can always alternatively fly to another location in Portugal and drive or get a coach to Coimbra. During the peak season in the summer, it can be a little busier but not overwhelmingly so. During football seasons, if there are any major matches going on, such as the Champions League, the then hotels can be booked up. Most Hotels require booking so it’s better to plan ahead. You can enter the country with a valid UK passport with no restrictions.

Climate

The climate in Coimbra is Mediterranean; warm summers and moderate winters. In the summer the weather can reach a very hot 29 degrees centigrade. In the winter the temperature is cool and moderate and is the rainiest time of the year. October to January can be fairly rainy months. Tourists are more likely to visit during the summer months, so it tends to be quiet in early spring and winter when the weather is cooler.

What to do

As mentioned earlier, the University of Coimbra is the main attraction, the oldest University in Europe (which is why it’s known as the Oxford of Portugal) sits on a pretty hill which over looks the city. Take a tour up to see the university and also have a look at the baroque library, the Bibliotheca Joanina. There is also a tall clock tower within the campus – it takes 178 steps to get to the top.

Coimbra also has a folk music culture, called Fado. Fado is similar to the blues, and includes the acoustic guitar. Visit some of the bars in the evening and you will find a guitar player, a singer and possibly a dancer entertaining creating an intimate setting.

If you are a football fan, visit the new football stadium which can hold 30,000 people. You can also walk down the modern bridge, the Ponte Europa which was built across the river Mondego. At the same time, the cobbled street house many old medieval style homes and buildings that are stunning to see.
