Destinations in Portugal
Faro is seen as the gateway to the Algarve, a region on the west coast of Portugal, surrounded by gorgeous blue seas, beaches and lots of sunshine. Needless to say, Faro and the Algarve are very popular destinations with UK tourists. Because it is a popular location, there is a lot of competition between the major airlines making it an affordable place to visit. With it being a beach resort, it is also a good location to find a package holiday for. During the summer it can be extremely busy with tourists from all around Europe.
Flights
You can fly from the UK to Faro with Easyjet, Jet2 and Monarch from the major international airports in the UK. Prices are usually competitive, especially during the quieter months. As Faro is similar to a resort holiday you may get a better deal booking a package holiday with the likes of Thompson or Airtours where you can choose self catering or all inclusive hotels. The local airport is Faro International Airport and you can get a transfer to your hotel or a taxi. You can access Faro with a valid UK Passport without any problems.
Climate
Faro is a sunny resort and gives warm weather during the summer months from July to August, where the temperature is 20 degrees centigrade upwards. It is also very dry so you don’t need to worry about rain. During the winter the weather is lower and more moderate and the rain will fall during this period. There are far fewer tourists when the temperature falls, so it’s a good time to visit if you want some peace and quiet, and don’t mind forfeiting some of the sun. Autumn is a good time to visit as you still have some sunshine and warmth and fewer tourists too.
What to do
Faro is a quaint little city, which is a gateway to many of the holiday resorts on the coast. There are lots of things to see in this town too; Faro Harbour is where the fishermen work, you can visit this area and have a look at the men at work. You can also visit the museums and the Arco da Vila which is the pathway into Faro’s Old town where restaurants and shops can be found. Here you can buy antiques and small handicrafts that are made by locals.
The Ria Formosa is a large lagoon and there is also the natural park which is full of pink flamingos.
Faro also includes some islands, such as the Barreta and Culatra islands. You can take a boat to these locations and enjoy some sunshine and fun. In the summer, the boat ride to Culatra is regular. Praia de aro and Praia da Culatra are two very poplar beaches in Faro.
If you like nature walks, try Sao Bras de Alportal which is just outside of Faro and has many grassy plains full of natural groves and has natural grown figs and almonds.
