Lisbon is Portugal’s capital city and lies over seven hills. It is a charming city which is made of various quarters – the Belem quarter is known as the most historic and lies beside a river. Then there is the Bairro Alto where there is the modern side to Lisbon, full of clubs, bars and restaurants. Getting round Lisbon is easy as there is a tram that will take you to different parts of the city. Taxis are also affordable as are other modes of public transport that are easy to use.

Flights

You can fly to Lisbon direct with Easyjet, KLM, Lufthansa, Brussels Airlines and Air France. Flights are normally affordable the sooner you book, although last minute bargains are to be had. The local airport is Aeroporto da Portela de Sacavern, or Lisbon Airport and is 5 miles away from the city. During the peak season, during the summer, flights are busy so be aware it’s harder to find a cheap flight then. Most tourists arrive during the spring through to summer. As Portugal is a football loving country, and the European football games will take place during the warmer months, flights will be pricey. The cheaper times to fly are during the late autumn and winter. You can fly from all the major international airports in the UK to Lisbon. You should have no problems entering the country using a valid UK passport.

Climate

The summer is very warm in Lisbon and the weather can reach the 30s centigrade. The winter is wet and windy and the weather brings a real chill although it is rare to see snow or truly freezing climates. July and August count as the summer months and these are the hottest periods. These are also the months that attract the most visitors, therefore flight and accommodation will cost more in this period. December to February is off peak and therefore it is cheaper to visit but the weather will be more moderate although it is never snowy or very rainy.

What to do

If you visit Lisbon, you need to try their famous Egg tart; this dessert is a secret recipe and is made from egg and topped with some cinnamon.

Alfama is an old district in Lisbon – the streets are narrow and there is the Castle of Sao Jorge – a castle that was renovated in 1938.

There is plenty of architecture to see in the city; the Se Cathedral is a grand place with stunning stained glass window. There I also the Sao Roque church, that is plain on the outside but inside holds the Chapel of St John the Baptist, and is decorated with silver, gold and precious stones. The Museu de Artes Decorativas shows off home wares, jewellery and furniture from the 15th century onwards.

If you like to shop then visit the Baixa – here are all the shops and cafes – a great place to eat and drink and buy some souvenirs.
