Located in south central Europe is Romania. Famous for its capital city, Bucharest, Romania has many different attractions for the visiting tourist including a scenic coastline on the Black Sea, the castles of Transylvania, and plenty of history and culture.

Flights to Romania

There are 10 airports in the country that can handle international flights to Romania. Of these the main ones are: Bucharest’s Otopeni Airport (airport code: OTP), Baneasa Airport (airport code: BBU) and the airport in Timisoara (airport code: TSR). One stop flights to Bucharest are offered by TAROM and discount airlines such as Wizz Air, Sky Europe and Blue Air. Other airlines that offer one stop flights to Romania from the UK include Austrian, KLM, Lufthansa, Swiss, and Air France.

Romania Tourist Attractions

Since the fall of the Iron Curtain Romania has been emerging as a tourist destination with a difference, and although one of the poorest countries to have joined the EU, Romania has been doing well over recent years due to economic reforms and more. The cities have been growing and although some of the history of the country may be getting lost there’s still ample opportunity to discover the real Romania out in the countryside and in regions such as Transylvania.

Bucharest

Bucharest is Romania’s capital and largest city, and like many other cities in the ‘new’ Europe it’s gaining in popularity as a tourist destination. It may not have quite the same appeal as some other cities in the region because it has an odd mix of architecture. The grey communist era buildings are not particularly appealing but in the old town you will find a range of more attractive historical buildings, making this the more popular part of Bucharest for tourists.

The old town has many shops, hotels and restaurants to cater to the visiting tourists, so this is definitely the place to come! Landmarks include the Parliament Palace, the Arc of Triumph, and Revolution Square, plus there are ample museums to visit such as the outdoor Village Museum, and the Bucharest History Museum.

Transylvania

For something a little different you should visit Romania’s best known region, Transylvania. Transylvania is of course famous for its castles and Dracula but it makes a fascinating place to visit as the small towns and villages are still very much set in their old ways, so the culture and myths of the region still play an important part even today.

Dracula’s Castle (also known as Bran Castle) is the most famous and it’s located right on the edge of Transylvania. It’s just in ruins today but is still a very popular tourist attraction. The town of Rasov is popular, especially its old fortress, plus there’s the Retezat National Park, but the whole of Transylvania is full of beautiful forests and mountains.

The Black Sea Coast

The Black Sea Coast of Romania has long been popular with nationals so it has many established resorts and it sometimes known as the Romanian Riviera. There are pretty beaches, towns and some great scenery to enjoy here if you want a beach holiday with a difference.

When Should You Visit Romania?

If you want to enjoy those Black Sea resorts then come during the summer when temperatures are warm to hot and great for swimming and sunbathing. In the winter there’s usually cold weather and lots of snowfall but this makes it perfect for enjoying some of Romania’s ski resorts. Spring and autumn could be great times for visiting Romania for general sightseeing.
