Located roughly in the centre of Serbia is Belgrade, the country’s capital and largest city. Belgrade is becoming increasingly popular with tourists and is well known for its beautiful white architecture, as well as culture, history and more.
Flights to Belgrade
The Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (airport code: BEG) in the only major international airport in Serbia, and it's located about 7.5 miles (12km) outside the capital city centre. There are currently two options for a direct flight to Belgrade from the UK, and that’s with British Airways or Jat Airways. Flights to Belgrade with a single European connection are common as an alternative, and there are several choices. Lufthansa makes a connection in Frankfurt, and a flight to Belgrade with United Airlines travels through Munich.
Belgrade Tourist Attractions
Belgrade is famous for its beautiful white architecture which actually gives the city its name – Belgrade means ‘White City’ in Serbian, and the best known white building is the Church of St Sava.
Church of St Sava
Known as both the cathedral and the Church of St Sava this wonderful building is the largest Eastern Orthodox building in the world and Belgrade’s best known landmark. It is a huge building that can accommodate up to 10,800 people and technically it’s still not completed. Construction on the church was started in 1935 but halted after only the foundation and some of the walls were built, due to the outbreak of war. It wasn’t until 1984 that construction began once again.
Belgrade Stari Grad
Belgrade’s Old Town (Stari Grad) is a top tourist attraction too where you’ll find hotels, restaurants and bars. There are many attractive streets including one of the most popular, Skadarlija, where the road is cobbled. Standing on a hilltop in Belgrade’s old town is Kalemegdan Fortress which dates right back to the year 535.
Parks and Gardens in Belgrade
In the same part of the city as the fortress, Kalemegdan Park is just one of Belgrade’s numerous parks and open spaces. This particular one is landscaped or you can visit the Jevremovac Botanical Garden. Belgrade Zoo is another option where you can see the fauna not the flora of the local environment and there’s an extensive collection to see with over 2000 animals from 270 species.
Museums in Belgrade
Being the capital of Serbia Belgrade is a culturally rich city and offers a selection of museums including the National Museum. This is a great all-round museum that focuses on the history of the country through its exhibits of art and archaeology amongst other things.
The Museum of Aviation Belgrade is well known, largely due to the striking architecture of this building. The museum is actually located at the Belgrade Airport and has many aviation related displays, exhibits and aircraft.
When Should You Visit Belgrade?
Summers are really the best time to visit Belgrade for nice weather though you can also experience some very pleasant days during the spring and autumn too. Winters are, on the other hand, a little on the chilly side for sightseeing. During the summer average high temperatures are between 25 and 27C, though bear in mind that May to July are wetter months.
