Once part of Yugoslavia, and then partnered with Montenegro, Serbia is a beautiful country in the Balkans region of Europe. Serbia may be landlocked but it has the benefit of tall mountains and ski resorts, along with attractive cities and more, all making this an increasingly popular tourist destination.

Flights to Serbia

The main international airport in Serbia is the Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (airport code: BEG) and it is located a short distance from the centre of Belgrade. Shuttles and public bus service can quickly take you into the city. For flights to Serbia, there’s only British Airways and Jat Airways who offer a non-stop route from London. Many airlines have flights to Serbia with 1 connection as well though. Swiss Airlines stops in Zürich; Lufthansa stops in Frankfurt, and United Airlines makes its transfer in Munich. More round-about flights to Serbia with 2 stops can be booked with Aer Lingus or Montenegro Airlines.

Serbia Tourist Attractions

Belgrade

As Serbia’s capital as largest city Belgrade has much to offer the tourist and it’s becoming more and more popular for short breaks. Belgrade means White City, and you can soon figure out why it’s named this when you see and the beautiful gleaming white architecture!

These include the largest Eastern Orthodox Church in the world, the beautiful St Sava Church, while Belgrade Fortress is another top tourist attraction too. There are also museums such as the National Museum and the Nikola Tesla Museum.

Novi Sad

Serbia’s second largest city is Novi Sad and the Petrovaradin Fortress is the city’s major attraction. Situated on the River Danube the Fortress not only offers history of its own but it’s now a multi-use area of the city with nightclubs, restaurants, bars, cafés and hotels within its walls, plus a museum, observatory and planetarium.

Vrsac and Subotica

Belgrade has plenty of beautiful architecture but it’s the cities of Vrsac and Subotica that are rated as two of the most beautiful towns in Serbia. Subotica, in the north of Serbia, is famous for its Hungarian architecture, while Vrsac, in the east of Serbia, offers both historical and modern sights. These include Vrsac Tower and two Orthodox Monasteries.

Kopaonik National Park

Serbia has beautiful cities but the country also has plenty of beautiful scenery too. The Kopaonik National Park is one place where you can experience this scenery and enjoy skiing during the winter at the park’s ski resort. The Zlatibor Ski Resort is another one on offer in Serbia if you want to go skiing in quieter surrounds.

When Should You Visit Serbia?

Serbia’s climate varies across the country with the high mountains obviously being cooler both in the summer and in the winter. The south of Serbia is usually a little warmer and more humid than the north where it can get quite cold and snowy. If you’re visiting Belgrade summers are a popular time and temperatures are really quite warm with an average high of 27C in July and August. Winters are in comparison quite cool – the average high in January is just 3.5C so probably too chilly for sightseeing.
