Alicante Tourist Attractions
The Beaches and Promenade of Alicante
Many tourists think of Spain’s southern and eastern coasts as simply a beach holiday destination, but this isn’t the case. There is far more to Alicante than just the beach! The beaches won’t disappoint you and there are some right on the coast in the heart of the city, or head out of Alicante for some quieter and less built up options.
If you don’t want to laze on the beach you can also enjoy the promenade and esplanade in Alicante that run along the shoreline. This is a pleasant and easy place to take a stroll and you’ll often come across artists and traders.
Castle of Santa Barbara
The main landmark for Alicante is the Castle of Santa Barbara. The prominent position of the castle, perched on top of Mount Benacantil in the middle of the city, makes this hard to miss after all! There’s been some form of castle here for thousands of years and the present one dates back to the 9th century. Since 1963, when the castle was restored and opened to the public, it’s been one of the top tourist attractions in Alicante. Visitors can walk up the mountain to the castle or make use of the elevator, or road and come by car.
The Basilica of Santa Maria
The oldest active church in Alicante is the Basilica of Santa Maria which was built between the 14th and 16th centuries. This beautiful church is built in the gothic style and actually replaced an earlier mosque that once stood here.
San Nicolas Cathedral
Though not as pretty to look at, San Nicolas Cathedral is the main church of Alicante. It too was built on the site of an earlier mosque and was built between 1613 and 1662.
Archaeological Museum of Alicante
Alicante has a number of museums of which the Archaeological Museum is one of the most important. The museum has won awards thanks to its exhibits and artefacts that are displayed within eight different galleries. There are artefacts dating back as far as 100,000 years, right up to the 19th century.
Art museums are also prominent in Alicante and include the Gravina Museum of Fine Arts, and the Asegurada Museum of Contemporary Arts.
When Should You Visit Alicante?
Alicante is warm enough for sightseeing all year round because even winters are mild to warm. The average high in January is around 17C, so great for sightseeing. If you prefer it hotter for the beaches then come in the summer when there’s virtually no rainfall and average highs in the low 30’s C. September and October are still hot, but these are the rainiest months.
