Almeria is located in the south of Spain, on the Mediterranean Sea. What is interesting about Almeria is that much of the land is barren desert. It has one of the warmest and driest climates in Europe and 330 days of sun per year, on average. As well as the warm weather, Almeria is a hot holiday spot for UK tourists because of its culture and relaxed fell. There is a slightly North African and Arab feel to the city, adding to its charm and uniqueness. If it gets too hot for you then visit the beaches or go diving to cool off.

Flights

Flights to Almeria are fairly regular so the prices are competitive. You can fly from most international UK airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Liverpool etc. Some of the airlines that fly to Tenerife include Bmibaby, Monarch, Easyjet, Ryanair, Iberia, Spanair, Jet2 and more. You will have no problems entering Almeria with a valid UK passport. There will be more competition for flights in the summer so make sure you book in advance.

Climate

Almeria is dry and arid – as a result it’s a popular location for western films. In the day and in the summer, the temperature can reach 40 degrees centigrade, with an average temperature of 33 degrees. In the night the temperature is around 25 degrees meaning air conditioning is preferred if you have trouble with humidity! In the winter the weather is still dry and comfortable, and the temperature is still a warm 15-20 degrees centigrade. It cools in the evening but doesn’t generally fall below 10 degrees.

What to do

Almeria has a lot of religious architecture that are worth visiting. The Almeria cathedral is a strong structure which resembles a fortress. The reason for this is because the cathedral used to be a target for pirates. Throughout the streets there are plenty of other churches, including an ancient Arab mosque.

If you love to eat then you need to try Almerian cuisine – the Ajo Colorao is a stew made with fish, potatoes and peppers or Rape a la barraca, which is fresh monkfish with leek and mushrooms.

In what is known as the historic quarter, you will find buildings that are important to Almeria; the hospital, the military offices, the Cervantes theatre and courthouse.

Almeria is built for strolls; the Niclas Salmeron Park runs by the sea and you will have a panoramic view of the sea and shore from here. The port is also a great place to relax and enjoy the weather. You can also take a walk by Paseo de Almeria and Real Street, or Calle de las Tiendas, which is the main shopping street.

Slightly out of Almeria are two stunning nature reserves, Sierra Nevada Nature Reserve and Cabo de Gate-Nijar, the first marine-land reserve in Andalusia.
