Destinations in Spain
Spain has the second largest tourism industry in the world, and there’s no surprise really. Spain has long been a favourite for British holidaymakers in particular, and enthusiasm for this country never waivers.
Spain is so diverse, from the coasts, to the cities, to the villages and the mountains and getting where you want to go has never been easier. The major cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga, Alicante and Valencia amongst others, all have international airports and all receive flights from the UK. The national airline is Iberia, though all the major charter airlines and budget airlines fly here too. Ryanair, for example, have flights from the UK to 15 different Spanish airports.
Cities
Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain and is located in the centre of the country, surrounded by mountains. The majority of the tourist attractions are situated in the historical centre. Here you will find medieval architecture, cathedrals and churches combined with a cosmopolitan mixture of shops and a buzzing night life.
Museums and art museums worth visiting include Museo del Prado and the National Archaeology Museum. The Palacio Real (Royal Palace) is a huge and beautiful building and should not be missed and the same goes for Plaza Mayor – an impressive square, the best known in Madrid.
Madrid has a continental climate – warm and wet summers and colder winters with snow being a possibility.
Flights from the UK to Madrid land at Barajas International Airport which is about 15 -20 minutes from the city and is well connected.
Barcelona is Spain’s second largest city, situated on the Mediterranean coast. It is a very vibrant city and has become an extremely popular tourist destination over the past decade. The mixture of historic and modern appeals to many, including the Ciutat Vella: the old town, and the Eixample: the modernist area, with much art nouveau architecture.
The climate here is Mediterranean, so warm temperatures all year round with the hottest and driest times in the summer and rainfall and mild temperatures through the winter.
To reach Barcelona, fly in to the International Airport, also known as El Prat, only around 6 miles from the city.
Other popular city destinations include Valencia on the Mediterranean coast, where paella was invented; Alicante, to the south of Valencia; Bilbao, in the north; Cadiz, the oldest city in Western Europe; and Seville, where you’ll find the world’s third largest cathedral.
Beach Destinations
Spain is perhaps most well known for its countless Mediterranean coastal resorts and miles of sandy beaches.
The Costa del Sol is the most renowned of these. Meaning ‘sun coast’, the Costa del Sol stretches for nearly 100 miles and includes the city of Malaga. To fly to this part of Spain, catch a flight to Malaga International Airport – there are plenty of carriers and a lot of competition for this route so you should be able to find some cheap tickets.
Further east in the province of Granada you can relax on some slightly less crowded beaches or go skiing in the Sierra Nevada in the winter! Flights from the UK are available directly to Granada Airport, or fly further east into Almeria Airport where direct flights from the UK are also available.
Almeria is a relatively unspoilt portion of coastline which offers some lovely beach resorts, as well as mountains, desert and national parks and is a good alternative to the Costa del Sol.
All of the southern and eastern coastline experiences a Mediterranean climate, so is a good place to visit at any time of the year, though particularly the summer for a beach holiday.
