Palma is a port and city on the popular island resort of Majorca. Majorca is part of the Balearic Islands in Spain which is a very popular holiday spot with UK holidaymakers. Although there are lots of beaches, lots of clubs and restaurants in Palma, there are also lots of historical and cultural attractions in the city. Cathedrals, monuments, galleries and palaces still stand and can offer a nice contrast to the traditional beach holiday. You will also find more locals in Palma than at the other heavily tourist focused beach resorts.

Flights

Flights to Palma are very regular so the prices are competitive. You can fly from most international UK airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Liverpool etc. Easyjet regularly fly to Palma, as does BMIbaby, Jet2, Thomsonfly and Flybe. You will have no problems entering Palma with a valid UK passport. There will be more competition for flights in the summer so be quick especially if there is a large group of you and if you have seating requirements.

Climate

In the summer, Palma is hot although the average temperature is just below 30 degrees. July and August are busy so you need to book in advance, especially for accommodation. In the autumn, the weather drops to around 19 degrees but the hotels are much quieter and you can get a better price. There is some rainfall throughout the summer but it is mild and the sea always offers a cooling breeze. In the winter the temperature dips to around 10c but it remains pleasant without a nasty chill.

What to do

Palma has plenty of beaches for you to relax on, and you can take your pick. The same for night clubs and bars; the choice is endless.

As well as these places, try to visit the Banys Arabs. These are 10th century Moorish baths that are hidden in the Barri Gothic, or the medieval quarter. The building is unique and a great place to see. The Castell de Bellver is also a stunning castle, which now has a museum inside. You can get a great view of Majorca form the palace, as well as look at old artefacts.

In Palma it is also the Majorca Museum which is near the gothic cathedral. Here are many artefacts and paintings from painters such as Dali, Miro, Picasso and so on. You can also get some great views from here!

Palma also has a casino on the sea front and is an open minded town; there is a gay and lesbian area in the city called the El Terreno. The Casco Antigua is known as the main party section of the old town and the Paseo Maritimo is slightly more upmarket and has a mix of eateries, bars and clubs. You will also find theatres and live music venues in this area, classical and modern dance music.
