Destinations in Sweden
When you think of a holiday destination, Sweden probably isn’t the first country that springs to mind! Yet this is a beautiful country, great for both city breaks and longer holidays.
The capital city, Stockholm, actually has five airports serving it so you should have no trouble in finding a flight from the UK. The main international airport is Arlanda (airport code: ARN), which is about 25 miles north of the city. The is the airport you will fly in to if arriving on SAS or British Airways flights, and is well connected to the city centre. Local transport is the cheapest option, though there are also coaches, trains and minibus shuttle services.
The other two Stockholm airports you can catch a flight to are used by Ryanair, amongst others. Skavsta Airport (airport code: NYO) is about 60 miles southwest of Stockholm. Ryanair fly here from London Stansted, Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow and Dublin. The airport is connected to the city via airport coaches. Alternatively there is Vasteras Airport (airport code: VST) where you ca get a flight with Ryanair from London Stansted only. Ryanair also have flights from the UK to Sweden landing at Gothenburg City Airport (airport code: GSE).
Stockholm
Stockholm is the capital and largest city of Sweden, situated on the east by the Baltic Sea. As a tourist, you will want to concentrate your time within the inner city, called ‘innerstaden’ as it is here that you will find the most historical parts of the city and interesting attractions.
Stockholm actually consists of a number of connected islands and the historical centre is Gamla Stan, The Old Town. Here you have the Royal Palace and the Riksdag, the Swedish Parliament as well as an assortment of pretty houses and cobbled streets. The can walk along the waterfront in places like Kornhamnstorg, a waterfront square.
Norrmalm is the main commercial area with lots of shopping. The main pedestrianised shopping street is Drottningatan. Or for more upmarket shopping there is the Ostermalm area around the Stureplan square where you can shop and enjoy the night life. In the Sodra Djurgarden (Southern Djurgarden) part of Ostermalm are some of Stockholm’s major tourist attractions, such as the Grona Lund amusement park and the Skansen open air museum.
Gothenburg
Gothenburg is Sweden’s second city. If you fly here with Ryanair you land at Gothenburg City Airport, a very small airport which only Ryanair and two other airlines use! There is a bus from here into the city.
Gothenburg is on Sweden’s west coast and is renowned for being a very friendly city! You can easily travel around the city by using the extensive tram system and if museums are your thing you can visit a variety of them here, from the Art Museum to the Volvo Museum! Plus there are several historical buildings worth seeing, such as Gothenburg Cathedral and Kronhuset (Crown House). For a change, you can see the city from the water, and there are a number of tourist boat tours available both on the canals and harbour as well as around the islands off the coast.
