By today’s standards Kalmar is a relatively small city, but for a period of several hundred years it was one of the most important cities in Sweden. Kalmar is situated in the south east of Sweden and has some great tourist attractions including Kalmar Castle and the Cathedral.
Flights to Kalmar
Getting a flight to Kalmar will always involve one connection as the Kalmar Airport (airport code: KLR) does not handle flights from anywhere other than Stockholm. From Stockholm you would catch a local flight to Kalmar with one of two airlines, Blue 1, or Scandinavian Airlines. From the UK, British Airways, Norwegian Air Shuttle, and Scandinavian Airlines all offer direct flight to Stockholm. The Kalmar Airport is just a few miles outside of town but there is no public transit. You can get to Kalmar by taxi, airport shuttle or rental car.
Kalmar Tourist Attractions
Evidence has been discovered that there has been a settlement at Kalmar since ancient times though the first real beginnings of a town date to the 11th century. Kalmar Castle, one of the city’s top tourist attractions, has foundations dating back to the 12th century, and the city was one of the most important in Sweden between the 13th and 17th centuries.
Kalmar Castle
The grand, Renaissance style architecture of Kalmar Castle makes this the city’s most recognisable and prominent landmark. Started in the 12th century with just a tower, Kalmar Castle was then added to extensively over the next several hundred years, finally being completed in the 16th century. For some time the castle actually fell into disrepair, following a fire in 1642, but an architect took on the restoration from the 1850s. Thanks to the restorations, Kalmar Castle is now one of the best preserved Renaissance castles in Sweden.
Kalmar Cathedral
Kalmar Cathedral is another of the city’s major landmarks, and it stands on Kalmar’s main city square, Stortorget. The cathedral was built between 1660 and 1703 and is in the classical baroque style.
The city square has recently been restored so as to provide a meeting place, and somewhere for events and festivals to take place. Standing opposite Kalmar Cathedral on the square is the Town Hall.
Museums in Kalmar
Kalmar Castle can be considered a living museum, but if you’re interested in history and culture the city has a couple of other museums to visit too. Kalmar County (Lans) Museum has a very good selection of exhibits depicting the history and culture of the local area, displayed within permanent and temporary exhibitions.
Kalmar (Konstmuseum) Art Museum is the other major museum for the city. It’s housed within a controversial modern building and displays contemporary art.
When Should You Visit Kalmar?
Being in the south of Sweden Kalmar enjoys quite warm temperatures in the summer months, making this a good time to visit. Average highs are in the low 20’s C so it’s really comfortable weather for walking around, and though there may be some rainfall, it’s not usually excessive amounts. Winters are cool in contrast, but even in January the average high stays above freezing. Snowfall comes most years, but doesn’t stay for long.
